The decontamination and decommissioning of the Karlsruhe reprocessing plant (WAK) is one of the most important nuclear projects of the next decade in Germany. For the valuation of the planned measures it will be helpful to take into account the experiences which have already been made with the decommissioning of similar plants in other countries. Several reprocessing plants have been shut down in the past because of their obsolete design or because there was no further demand for operation. In other cases parts of those plants have been decommissioned, upgraded or rebuilt which normally implicated extensive decontamination and dismantling work.
