C, library 12:00 noon Room 501, Library Saturday May 23, 1970 1. II. III. IV. V. Present were Mrs. Larudee, Dr. Hok, Dr. Tadros, Dr. Beasley, Dr. Roberts, and Mr. pippin. Committee approved proposed agenda. Draft minutes of meeting of March 19 were approved. Notification was made of resignation of Library Committee secretary. It was decided that the Chairman should act also as secretary for the present meeting, the last of the academic year. The Acting Librarian reported on the meeting of April 30 of the Library Administrative Committee. The L.'A.C, had shown itself favorable to a' change in the Library to the Library of Congress classification of holdings. However, the L.A.C. wished to take no further action on this change until the change had been approved by the Library Committee. The Librarian demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the Library Committee, that introduction of the Library of Congress system of classification will make for a far more accurate, consistent, and rational arrangement of our Library collection. As the Library of Congress classification is gradually introduced, new acquisitions will be the first to be given Library of Congress /ii%mbers, while present holdings will be given the new numbers as they are returned from Circulation; thus, although, for a time, library holdings will necessarily be divided into those with Library of Congress numbers and those with the old Dewey numbers, a real advantage to student use may L<&• —be-in presenting the students, in one location, new and often-sought works on a given subject, apart from the older and less-sought collection. Also, introduction of the Library of* Congress classification will reform present faulty cataloging, as well as make easier and more rational any needed future weeding. The Library Committee unanimously endorsed the introduction of the Library of Congress classification of holdings. \ V
