THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO Faculty Meeting January 17, 1966 Report of Dean Blanning;- Dr. Kern has asked for a presentation to the faculty concerning the possibility of the organization of a club, a co-op, or some type of a mutually beneficial group. 1. There is a possibility of a recreation type of faculty group. Through cooperative effort we might have a boat on the Nile, a tent on the desert, a place for swimming and sun near Alexandria — all available to faculty on a regular sign-up basis. It would offer faculty or individual recreation at rates all could afford. 2. There is the possibility that a co-op might be organized to take advantage of Mass purchasing. It might be particularly helpful for securing hard-to-get items. 3. A purely social group might be organized, with planned faculty parties and get-togethers. Perhaps more social use could be made of the Faculty Bulletin by passing along information and news of faculty activities. In a talk with the President last week, we were informed that any activities such as those listed above would have the fullest University support possible. However, the faculty must initiate their own group activities and make them financially self-supporting.
