THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO Minutes of the Faculty Meeting of February 28th,1970 This was the fourth meeting of the academic year. The meeting was called to order at 1*35 P*m» by the Vice-Chairman, Dr. Saad Gadalla. On behalf of the faculty the Vice-Chairman congratulated Mr. Thoron on his appointment as President of The American University in Cairo. 24.The approval of the minutes of the meeting of Tuesday, January £0th 1970 was postponed until the following faculty meeting. 23*Statement by President Thoron The President started by thanking the faculty for its congratulations. He then summarized the results of his recent visit to the U.S.A. Next year A.U.C. will probably have a slightly increased grant which will give the university a slightly increased budget. The increase would be approximately 3% p.a. which is favorable compared with universities in the U.S.A. The Board of Trustees has approved an increase in salary for present faculty members of approximately 10% of present base salaries. The P.P.P. committee is at present discussing how or in what fofm this increase should be applied. During his visit to the U.S.A. the President found an increased interest in the Middle East and a feeling among some people not previously interested that there is an imbalance in the U.S. policy towards the Middle East. The Board of Trustees had decided not to meet in Cairo this year as originally planned; however the President stated that we would welcome individual visits by members of the Board
