AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO Summary Report on Enrollment, First Semester =*- IS$ Uc^do- 1957-1958 J I0 New Enrollment; This year a large number of applications was received by the Admissions Office* On Saturday, September 21st the following appljpda^ons had been received: To Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Morning To Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Evening To Faculty of Education Total Last year the number of accepted applications received was 329; those who' passed and registered numbered 2480 The number of new entrants this year has not yeat been counted; a rough estimate may be as follows: Faculty of Arts and Science, Morning 75 English Language Institute, Morning 46 Faculty of Arts andScience^i Evening 20 English Language Institute, Evening 27 Faculty of Education 15 Graduate Faculty 11 194 The drop in new enrollment in sjjite of the lar£e numbers of accepted applications submitted is due to: 10 Most applicants came from Egyptian or Arabic schools and therefore either failed the English Proficiency Examination or came to the E*L.I. leveL Since the E.L.I, had to be limited in size, many applicants had to be rejected* 20 Increase of fees and requirements in the eveaiig units plus other factors with regard to which the adult population is more sensitive: political situation and non-recognition of the degree* 11° Total Enrollment: Enrollment in the different units as of October 11, 1956 is shown in the attached table which also includes the enrollment figures of the year 1954-55, 1955-56 and 1956-57* It may be safely concluded that enrollment in the morning units has been regularly rising* Raising of our admission and student standing requirements has not had any adverse effect upon enrollment in these units* The E*L.I. is becoming a most important feeder unit for the undergraduate units of the University* On the other hand enrollment in the evening units has been steadily declining Since 1956 the rate of decline accelerated. The enrichment of the evenin
