AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO 4^07 Report on Enrollment, First Semester, 1957-1958 I. NEW ENROLLMENT; (Table I, p.4) According to the statistics submitted by the Office of Admissions, a total of 498 complete applications to the Undergraduate Faculty were received this fall. 58 percent of these applications wer accepted (294 applications )whereas 36 percent were reject by the English Exam. Committee(177 applications). Only 210 students, i.e, 42 percent of the applicants registered in the E.L.I. and Undergraduate units. Of the rejected applications 67 were clear failures while 110 were rejected because of lack of space in the E.L.I* c A3 00 0 a-> * -< r m > 0 It rn c It is apparent that our selection this year has been quite severe. The need to limit the size of the student body of the E.L.I. has obligated the Admission Committee to accept and implement a high cutting score on the English exam, and then to select the applicants with the best credentials among those whose English was judged to be of the same level. The system used this year cannot be justified in the future; the University should plan for a bigger English Language Institute and for a reasonable requirement of English Competency. According to verbal reports from the Director of the E.L.I., selecting the best among the E.L.I. candidates has not even passed without ill effects. Problems of classification and program planning have become more acute and a significant number of students, whose English has almost reached the Freshman level may be in danger of losing interest in the instruction. The Registrar and the Director of Admissions recommend that this major problem be carefully studied by a self-study committee. Table I also shows that the drop in new enrollment this year has affected the F.A.S. Morning (because of English language exam) and the Faculty of Education. English Language Institute this year has been made a little larger while the-new major in F.A.S. Evening has drawn students from new quartei a fact which explains the rise in enrollment from 14 (last-year) to 22 this year. Table II shows the classification of the new entrants this semesters 38 percent were female students and 62 percent male; 43 percent wore enrolled in the Freshman classes; and 71 percent came from Cairo. In table III are shown the qualifications of the Undergraduate applicants. The Thanawiyya ’Ama (Egyptian Secondary School Certificate) ranks first and is followed by the English G.C.E., the French Daccalaureate and the Junior Diploma of the American Girls’ College. Thanawiyya holders alone rate 37 percent of all applicants to the Undergraduate Faculty; last year they were about 30 percent and the year before last they were much less. Another evidence of the rising enrollment of the Thanawiyya ’Ama holders may b
