MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL OF THE .AMERICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO 1. ORGAN I RATION The first meeting of the Council of the American University at Cairo was held on Thursday, June 1, 1922 at 4,30 P.M, It was opened by prayer by Dr. C, R, Watson,- the President of the University. There were present Dr. R. S. McClenahan, Principal of the College of Arts and Science; W. W. Cleland, Bursar of the University; Arthur Jeffery, representing temporarily the School of Oriental Studies; and Russell Galt of the Faculty of the College of Arts and Science. Dr. Watson explained that while the regulations of the University By Laws required that the nominations for the Council be passed upon by the Board of Trustees before the Council could have official existence, nevertheless, the Board of Trustees had empowered him to proceed with the organization. Copies of Article VII of the By Laws of the University explaining how the Council is constituted and defining its duties and powers, were distributed and discussed, Russell Galt was elected Secretary. 2. APPROVAL OF THE The first item of business was the approval of ' BUDGET 1922-25 the Budget for 1922-23. This item was approved by the Council, with the understanding that expenses for Commencement Exercises in 1923 should be charged to the Emergency Account. 3. BOARD OF The Council discussed the organization of a Board ADVISORS of Advisors, as to the wisdom of having it and its possible membership. The matter was referred to a committee consisting of Messrs. McClenahan and Cleland. 4. FUTURE PLANS Under the general subject of future plans the President introduced the following: (a) The Use of the Grounds, involving the whole question of future development either in the city of Cairo or outside of it; (b) The Staff of the College, involving the number of permanent chairs to be established and the amount of money required to maintain them; (c) Schedule of Furloughs, and (d) Selection of Appropriate Mottoes to be Painted on the Panels of the Main College Building. 5. COMMITTEE ON USE Dr. McClenahan and Prof. Cleland were appointed a OF GROUNDS committee, with the President ex officio, to bring in a report for the next meeting on the Use of the Grounds
