APRIL 10th, 1926 ORGANIZATION The Council of the American University at Cairo “ " met on April 10 with Dr. Watson presiding. The following were present: Dr. Watson, Dr. McClenahan, Messrs. Cle-land, McQuiston, Jeffery. Dr. Watson opened the meeting with prayer. MINUTES Minutes of Meetings of March 20th and April 5th were corrected and approved. STAFF CONFER- A conference of the Staff having been held and the ENCE ON sentiment of the meeting reoorded, the following HOUSING memorandum was drawn up and approved: (1) While recognizing the very great value of having the University Staff, especially in the case of the younger members, residing in close proximity to the University plant for the sake of developing that sense of solidarity and unity which comes from a common social life and frequent personal contacts, and while recognizing that the interests of the University, especially on its administrative side, will probably require always that a substantial number of the University Staff shall reside in close proximity to the University plant, it is to be also recognized that health, family, and other considerations may require removal from the city. The Council therefore records its judgment that such cases may be wisely considered as they arise and that permission can be granted for each suburban residence, subject to the assurance that such residence will not be allowed to interfere with claims of University duties and appointments. (2) With reference to the request of Mr. McQuiston for permission to locate at Maadi, permission is hereby granted for his residence there, subject to the usual rules and with the understanding that should conditions require it, this decision may be considered in connection with arrangements for residence during any future year. CONTRACTS Contracts as submitted by the Finance Committee were approved: (a) with Mr. Kiven as teacher in the C611ege Department; the conditions of his appointment being as set forth in a letter by Dr. McCleAahan to him on April 10th, a copy of which is filed with the Bursar.
