Dr. Brown said that Dr. Pedersen and Dr. John Munro are discussing ways in which AUB and AUC can work together in the Arab Gulf. A protocol for this cooperation is being reviewed. 8. Report of the Alumni & Student Affairs Committee: Mrs. Driscoll. Mrs. Driscoll reported that the Board was already aware through the President's report of the problems which the devaluation of the Egyptian pound has created for Egyptians paying at the non-subsidized rate by substantially increasing the number of Egyptian pounds needed to pay. Due to these high rates, the quota of Egyptians paying the full rate was not filled (being short 54 students). It is hoped that the new tuition structure will alleviate these problems. Vice President Allam will be travelling to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf to recruit students so that all places will be filled next year. If all of the student places assumed under the current Long Range Plan cannot be filled, it is possible that the implementation of aspects of the plan would be slowed. Mrs. Driscoll introduced Omar Ghorbal, Vice Chairman of the AUC Associates, who generally described the goals of the Associates. The Board moved to approve the current mandate of the AUC Associates. 9. Report of the Development Committee: Mr. Hedlund. Mr. Hedlund asked Dr. Pelowski to report on fund raising activities. Dr. Pelowski briefed the Board on the following: * Library Endowment: An endowment to support library acquisitions has been determined as a primary fund raising project. $1 million is sought for general acquisitions and $500,000 for both Engineering
