2 candidates for the award (Milton Viorst, Thomas Friedman, David Shipler and John Kifner) and would be presenting them to the University for consideration. Mr. Mac Donald stated that such an event would show the public that the institution has the organization, funds, and ability to present this type of event and that Washington D.C. would be the ideal site since the target audience there is much more easily identified. He then asked for the Committee's reaction to his presentation. Dr. Pedersen questioned Mr. Mac Donald's proposed budget ($20,000 to stage the program and $5,000 to strike a gold medallion), stating that AUC's aim should be for a self­financing event. Mr. Mac Donald accepted Dr. Pedersen's reservations, but thought that corporate contributions could be acquired toward underwriting the event. He volunteered that Mobil would help in getting "the right kind of people" to attend the event. Mrs. Thorne stated that, in her opinion, AUC would need a professional to organize such an event, and as long as AUC could get a top person, she thought AUC should go ahead with these plans. Mr. Mac Donald then asked for approval to proceed on the next step for the affair and stressed the need to move quickly once approval is granted. Dr. Pedersen stated that the Journalism Department should be involved in choosing a journalism award candidate and that the Department should be given enough time to develop a list of candidates that could be presented at the May Board meeting. Mr. Mac Donald stressed that any candidate should be a legitimate recipient; that the Chicago degree presentation was damaging to the University because it seemed to be given solely for fund-raising purposes. C. Washington p.C. Representatiye. Dr. Pedersen referred to the decision paper on the open pOSition of AUC's Washington representative and re-iterated the general qualifications he would like to see in any proposed applicants. He noted that the position should be a full-time job rather than part-time as previously and that the candidates should have all­around abilities rather than be lobbying professionals. Noted that Mobil had offered to do pro bono work in trying to place AUC news in the press. Mr. Mac Donald said he will wait until Dr. Pedersen talks with his own Washington D.C. contacts for their recommendations, and pointed out that Mobil does have a good lobbyist in D.C. who would be appropriate for AUC. 4 . A. Mahfouz Nobel prize. B. Contracting Out of publishing Rights for Mahfouz. Dr. Pedersen referred to the two information papers before the Public Relations Committee on Naguib Mahfouz. He pointed out that AUC has all worldwide translation rights other than those contracted to other publishers.
