~. • • -2- Nex t, under Item 2(c) of the Agenda, "Promotional Plans," Mr. Mac Donald stated that he felt the book could be the centerpiece for AUe's first spectacular event ever held. He suggested consideration be given to using the Temple of Dendur area at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The people at Mobil have looked into availability, he said, and the first date would be May 4, unless there is a prior cancellation. The price, he stated, would be $65,000, plus a $25,000 charge which }10bil could donate as the corporate sponsor. He said that the $65,000 cost could be met by charging $325 per person for an event for 200 people. Mr. Devine mentioned that he had had a similar discussion with people at the museum and had been given the same cost figures. Mr. Mac Donald said that the event would have two objectives: promote the book and promote Ave. He outlined a plan, prepared by Mobil, for promotion of the book through regular book circles: Stage 1 would entail announcing of the book approximately 3-4 months before its publication; Stage 2 would combine some small special media events with publication of the book; and Stage 3 would be an all-out effort to identify and pursue press relations among the leading newspapers and the like. He stated that the cost of such a professional public relations effort would be approximately $3,000-$4,000 per month. 2. In turning once again to the museum event, Mr. Mac Donald said many of the costs could be met by socially prominent people chairing the party, as well as through corporations taking/buying tables. Mr. Devine raised the question of the way in which this could be done, since the musuem is not allowed, as far as he understood, to hold benefits for other institutions. There was a general discussion about ways around this rule -- including having the corporations pay the costs of the entertainment, meals, and the like -- and it was agreed that the Mobil people would look into this further and study ways costs could be donated. Mr. Mac Donald brought up the name of Ms. Glynn as a possible organizer. Mrs. Desforges suggested that the party also be used as a vehicle for the campaign close-out party, and there was general agreement that this would be a good idea for a theme in addition to the book. Mr. Mac Donald expressed the committee's view that in the following months there would be a firm decision to go ahead with the party and a definite date would be picked. Mr. Devine suggested that if the Metropolitan Museum does not work out as a location for the party that consideration be given to the St. Regis Rooftop Room or the Pierre. He said both could be "Egyptianized" in terms of their decor and that Ave could then hold a major fund-raising event, as opposed to the party at the museum. The committee agreed that other options should be explored, and the Mobil people said they would look into this. Mr. Mac Donald also suggested that there be an auction and other types of typical fund-raising events at the party. Suggestions were made for the auction, including Roberts' prints and the originals of Walter Ferro's watercolors. Dr. Winder said that since there is no real commercial value for the book Aue should not invite "bookers" to the dinner/dance for free, and the committee agreed with this view . 3. Mr. Mac Donald then turned the committee's attention to Item 3 of the Agenda and specifically mentioned the possibly of Ave hosting a benefit lunch in Washington, D.C. sometime in the fall at which a government official, such as Senator Hatfield, would receive an Ave medallion.
