Report on New Courses and New Programs Changes in the academic program which have been made this year were discussed, including, on the undergraduate level, the introduction of Biology, Art, and Music, and a major in Theater, the addition of photographic journalism as a specialization in Mass Communication, the addition of courses in Coptic and Hieratic languages in Egyptology (without addition of faculty), and the development of a 10-hour-per-week semi-intensive Arabic language course carrying 6 credits per semester, primarily for Year Abroad students. Also for undergraduates, several departments have modified their requirements to take into account the fact that some of the material covered within their departments will now be covered in the Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum which will be introduced in Fall 1989 will necessitate the hiring of 10 new faculty. On the graduate level, the Political Science faculty have strengthened the research design and techniques aspect of their M.A. program, and Mass Communication will offer its Television Journalism option only to graduate degree students. Some trustees discussed the content of the core curriculum, noting the value of broadening its focus to include elements other than Arabic and Western culture. Others observed that because AUC is a Western institution operating in the Arab world, its Egyptian graduates need to be especially well-versed in their own culture to counteract public opinion that they are "westernized", and that inclusion of too many cultural elements can result in both great expense (hiring more faculty) and in superficial preparation of our students. Concern was also expressed about expanding the program and faculty beyond what the University could afford in the event of an economic downturn. President Pedersen assured the trustees that the administration is watching enrollment carefully, budgeting accordingly, and seeking trustee approval at each stage of the implementation of the Long Range Plan. 6. Further Developments on Private Universities in Egypt President Pedersen observed that recent announcements by the Egyptian Minister of Education regarding creation of two Institutes of Technology that will apparently charge LE 2500 tuition per year, and studies now under way that may lead to the establishment of a German research university, a French Francophone African-oriented university in Alexandria, and an Egyptian-sponsored Pan-African university in Aswan, indicate that AUC may expect to have competition for funding and for students in the future. This is a distinct, positive change in the educational envi ronment in Egypt. 7. Progress Report on 1989/90 Faculty Recruitment There were 31 faculty vacancies to be filled for the 1989-90 academic . year, i ncluding five new positions. As of May 1, .20 vacancies were f i lled a nd six addi tional contract offers had been made .
