- 4 - minors in art and music, and in continuation of present film programs to justify combining those components into a department. One new faculty member would be added in 1989 in art and one in music to make this possible. The Computer Science major is now strong enough that it should be changed from a free-standing unit into a department. And with the addition of TV journalism, Mass Communications is again growing and should be given status independent of Political Science/Economics, where it now is and into which it does not quite fit. The Academic Committee will be considering recommendations approved by the Academic Board to make each of these into a department. Adult Education also has moved forward energetically this spring. More importantly, perhaps, is the considerable amount of interest being expressed by universities and authorities elsewhere in Egypt in obtaining our help. Projects are operating or in planning stages in Tanta, Alexandria, Kafr e1 Sheikh, Mansoura, Menoufiya, Fayoum and Port Said. We expect others to follow as well. CONSTRUCTION AND PURCHASES The Jamee1 Center is moving ahead smartly. Its appearance is excellent and we will be able to use it, at least partially, in the fall. We are on the verge of concluding an agreement to build the dormitory, and would have concluded it already except for a last-minute hitch last week that is not yet worked out. Construction should start before September. We have reached agreement with the government in principle on the purchase of apartments at Sadat City. We have made a tentative agreement to buy a six story building in Mohamed Mahmoud Street opposite the AUC entrance that we are asking the Board to authorize us to conclude at this session. (The building is an apartment building, in excellent shape, that we plan to use primarily for offices.) And the government finally has adopted a law that will enable us to acquire title to property with the approval of the Council of Ministers. We intend to start first with a request to complete purchase of the Sheikh Rihan property. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION I have made a more detailed report on this subject to the Academic and Research Committee. The Board more generally should also be aware of the matter, as AUC has an important opportunity within a currently favorable climate to expand relations with and services to other American universities. In essence there now is a considerable emphasis on international education in US university circles. The interest includes foreign languages, university curricula, foreign students studying in the US, US students abroad, contract work abroad, and other matters as well.
