Some departments may make greater use of research than at present, some may de.. velop honors programs for stimulation of their better students, and all will have reason to exercise greater initiative in pro­gram planning, staffing, financing, and the like. The concept of liberal studies will be sharpened and stressed even more than in the past. Great as is the need in the United Arab Republic for technological education, the University will leave this task largely to the Egyptian universities and to the various institutes being established by this government and others, all of which are in a better position to offer technologi­cal training. While the American University at Cairo will offer a larger amount of work within each of its departmental con­centrations, as stated above, the work will be characterized by the devotion to liberal studies that has always marked the Uni­versity. Since fewer hours will be spent in the broad, generalized studies that usually have been thought of as signalizing the "liberal arts emphasis," it will be necessary for the University to seek approaches to teaching and course structuring that will enable students to apprehend departmental offerings both as units of specialized knowledge and as part of the liberal stud­ies. More responsibility will devolve upon the administration and teachers to discover meaningful relationships among the disciplines, to promote scholarly abilities and insights, and to arrive at abstractions that may stand as philosophical points of reference. It will be necessary for the teacher to reveal how the 30cial scientist, for example, may be informed by the scientist and inspired by the humanist in his own approaches to knowledge and life.
