Our principal issue at this session, as usual in May, will be faculty salaries, which I will come to at the end of this report. Before doing so I will review other signifi-cant University developments. ACADEMIC The Academic Board approved the revised program for a new B.Sc. in Computer Sciences, after modifying the proposal slightly to shift six hours from collateral to elective studies. (The effect will be to elim-inate six hours of required chemistry and to permit those six hours to be decided upon by student choice.) Implementation of this new, important major is now dependent upon hiring of faculty. Our hope is to institute it by the fall of 1985. Location of the program is still not decided, Science, Engineering and Management all wanting it. Most likely it will be placed temporarily under our new outstanding Engineering Professor, Dr. El Wahil (who will take over Engineering next year) until a final decision is made. The Academic Board also approved broadening Egyptology to a major. This program will also be introduced when faculty recruitment is accomplish-ed, either this year or in 1985. (Two full time faculty - one Egyptian and one American - will be required.) Dr. Labib Habachi, the outstanding Egyptologist and friend of AUC, who died in February, gave his library to AUC. It has now been received, and as a result AUC has an outstanding library in Egyptology for the first time. I have also asked Dr. El Ezabi (Assoc. Dean of the Faculty) to convene the Long Range Planning Committee next year to study future developments in AUC's curriculum, in response to the Trustee request in February. Finally, we will be giving our first honorary doctorate - a Doctor of Humane Letters - at our June Commencement to an outstanding Egyptian intellectual. We had originally intended also to give one to an American as well, but neither of the approved candidates could come and the University's screening committee had recommended against giving degrees in absentia the first time.
