PEDERSEN PRESIDENT May 17, 1988 Dear As is usually the case in May the principal issues before the Board at this session are financial and salary related matters - the 1988/89 budget, 1988/89 tuition, 1988/89 compensation scales, and retirement. The intensity and importance of the issues this year is greater than usual. TUITION I discussed with the Board in February our new tuition concepts and obtained approval to go ahead. Since then there have been extensive discussions within the administration and with the faculty, including the Department Chairmen and the Academic Board. We have also touched base at appropriate points in the government so that what we are doing and why will be understood. Our intention now is to release the policies early in June. In essence they are these: 1) Continuing students: - to limit the increase in full tuition to $100 (from $6100 - $6200) - to increase subsidized tuition by 20% as usual but to restate it in dollars. (Nevertheless we will allow it to be paid partly in pounds, partly in dollars.) 2) New students: - to set the tuition at $6500 (only a 6.5% increase over this year). - to eliminate the concept of "local tuition" and to substitute for it graded subsidies for Egyptians based on full tuition. The subsidies would be based on the secondary school academic achievement of those admitted as follows: Top 30% Next 25% Next 25% Next 20% - 75% subsidy - 50% subsidy - 25% subsidy - $6200 (full tuition less $300) - all foreign students to continue to pay full tuition. local students to be able to pay half in pounds and half in dollars. 113.
