The Washington and New York groups agreed to seek to establish two $25,000 endowed scholarships and over $5000 in pledges were received at each meeting. In Canad~ our alumni noted that contri­butions to AUC are not tax-deductible. We have enough alumni there to make it worthwhile to try to qualify. In adult education the Greek school we hoped to rent in Heliopolis for an extension center has not materialized. We have found a Coptic school that would like to rent space to us and are currently negotiating. The probability is that the program will start this year. CAMPAIGN Both new pledges and actual contributions slowed down last year and the current level of the campaign is only marginally ahead of last year at this time. The stage of the campaign, world-wide economic cut-backs, staff changes in Cairo and other factors were involved in the slow down. We are now well restaffed in Cairo with two new part-time and well connected Egyptian members having joined the staff and with Dr. pelowski having established excellent, organized personal direction. A proposal has gone to IBM for a $775,000 contribution to help us establish our major and the university generally as a force in computer development in the Middle East. As the local office is only apparently recommending the $200,000 equipment portion of that contribution we may need some further help from Board members at senior IBM levels. Osman Ahmed Osman, the most important entrepreneur and contractor in Egypt, has agreed to join our Egyptian fund raising committee, and we have suggested to him endowing of an engineering chair. He told us he will contribute, and we expect his reply in the next few months. The September luncheon in Chicago addressed by AUe gradua"te and holder of our Distinguished All~ni Award, Ahmed Abdulatif, helped introduce us to several new corporations. My sense of the general situation is that the campaign will pick up well this year, although the continued Iraq-Iran war and the pending cut-back in oil prices may interfere. I have commented before that because so much of our money has come for capital projects, we will have to raise our goal to achieve the principal aim of raising $16 million in new endowment. I think the Board has generally concurred in that thought. $30 million now seems to be what we need rather than $22 and we might want to consider raising the goal sometime later this year. Indeed I could see us easily raising $10 million for capital expenditures
