While we would not presume to nominate members of the group whose mission it would be to scrutinize our admittedly vested interests, it would perhaps be useful to give several examples of the kinds of persons w~ believe would produce meaningful and useful conclusions. Dr. Fred Harrington, former President of the University of Michigan, whom we know has worked with you before and for whom we know you have high esteem, comes immediately to mind. Similarly, Governor Lane Dwinell, whom we understand has recently re­tired from government service, seems eminently qualified for such a study in light of his business background and ·his long experience in international edu­cation. Because any such study will necessarily involve basic consideration of the physical plant of the University it would seem wise to include an archi­tect and/or engineer--Mr. Hugh Newell Jacobson, the distinguished architect, is already familiar with AUC and Egypt and would be an ideal choice, we believe. Given the ramifications of any study of an American institution in present­day Egypt, we are sure that you will agree that the Egyptian Government should be kept advised at all stages. Perhaps the most appropriate way to achieve this would be through the present Sequestrator of the University, Dr. Hussein Fawzi. The former Sequestrators of AUC--Dr. Hussein Said (former UAR Minister of Higher Education and now on the faculty of Cairo University) and Dr. Nazih Deif (former UAR Minister of Treasury and currently Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund)--would also be highly valuable to any such study, we believe. This letter is merely an attempt to revive ~t what seems to be an auspic­ious time our mutual interest in a basic reassessment of the American University in Cairo. The ideas expressed herein are offered for your reflection and com­ments. In conclusion, may I again express our gratitude for your sincere and lively understanding of the University and for your desire to see that its future be, insofar as possible, a product of design rather than of chance or mutation.
