Dear Tom: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia March 31, 1964 Looking back on our recent AUC Board meetings with the perspective afforded by my present altitude here at Addis Ababa. I am deeply impressed by a few things I would urge you to communicate to the Trustees, particular­ly those who were not In CaIro. First, we all appreciated the careful planning you and the others had done so that our stay could be both useful for the University and pleasant for us. We had an opportunity to learn more about where our University operates, vIsiting schools, the Hamamsy fann, and some of the Cairo mosques. Our meetings with the Governor of Cairo, the Ministers of Education, pub­lishers, educators and others made vivid for us some of the factors bear­ing on how our University must be administered for maximum education and minimum friction. Each trustee senses the University more vividly than before. Seeing the buildings -- old, new and stili only planned, meeting with students, dining with faculty, discussing with Academic Board and Univer­sity Council, amd our own Board of Trustees meetIngs there in Islamic decor, such experience left its Imprint on each trustee, I feel sure. I myself wish to make a final observation at this time of great uncertainty for AUC.What has been planned and is now being done strikes me as valid and balanced, of great integrity and promise, worthy in every way of the best efforts of Raymond and you and all associated with you -­including us trustees!
