Board 2/58-page 6 The members of the Board of Trustees of the American University at Cairo in completing a week of meetings in Cairo desire to acknowledge their great sense of privilege in having been able to neet in this center of the Arab world. We who have known Egypt of old have returned to find a people freed of oppressions of corruption, underprivilege and foreign domination. Egyptians are rightly proud to be Egyptians. Their ancient Arabic heritage is being manifested on all sides. A dynamic initiative is to be observed in all activities of life. Significant social reforms are taking place. New schools are rapidly being built. New housing is rising. A courageous and selfless leadership has cone forward to bring a better day in a troubled world. It is our hope that in this forward movement the resources of our Univer-sity may continuo to enrich the life of the Middle East and bring a deepening understanding of . it to the American people. We rejoice in being a meeting place of two great cultures. We are delighted in the friendship and welcome we have received from everyone; we are grateful for the goodwill shown by the community of Cairo to our University and its staff and, as we return to our homes, we salute the people of Egyrt and the United Arab Republic and give to them our best wishes for the future. 4.. THAT the Board approves in principle the acceptance of U.S. government funds, if they become available, but that specific proposals be submitted to the Board for approval, it being understood that these gifts will in no way deflect from the Univer-sity9s purpose as stated in its charter, (One dis-senting vote - Mr, Andrus). 5. THAT the three recommendations of the Trustees? Committee on Nature, Purposes and Program of the University be approved as follows: THAT the Board of Trustees express its appreciation to, and its respect for, the Faculty Self-Study Committee and for its Report on Enrollment and Cur-riculum Matters, approving heartily the effort and courage of this committee to determine major directions in the academic program, to establish clear priorities, and to outline ways of both achieving greater excellence and reduced operating costs in this program..
