Appointment of Vice President In Cairo I I , The matter of appo ntment as Vice President of the University had been discussed with Dr. Hussein Said of Cairo University and he had been interested in the apPointment; however, before the appointment had been finalized, he was appointed Minister of Higher Education in Cairo and so he withdrew f~ considera~ tion of our vice presidency. Dr. Hussein suggested that we contact Dr. Ahmed Abdul Ghafar Saleh, vice president of Ein Shams University •• Dr. Saleh is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, fifty-nine years of age, and he seemed a qualified candidate for the appointment. He will be a real asset to the University. The suggestion was made that if at all possible Dr. Saleh be allowed to come to America for a school year, or at least for a semester, to visit American colleges and universities, to improve his knowledge and back-g round of Arner I can educa t i on. The t rus tees concu r red in this suggestion. Upon motion, duly seconded, it was voted THAT Dr. Ahmed Abdul Ghafar Saleh be appointed Vice­President of the American University in Cairo in accordance with Dr. Bartlett's proposal to him. 2. Dean Shane will be leaving the University at the end of this academic year. A strong replacement will be needed for him, perhaps in the nature of a Provost, who can bring together all the research, teaching, . staff recruitment, the complications of the library general administration, etc. The trustees will need to consider this as they plan for the reorganization of the New York office in the light of Dr. McLain's resignation. 3. General comments - Dr. Bartlett reported that real progress has been made in the last three or four years since the introduction of the 1961-62 plan in academic development. organization, departmental units, leadership for responsibility taken by departmental chairmen. etc. The heads of the departments now play I
