• .. -4- Be it RESOLVED that the Trustees of The American University in Cairo wish to and do hereby express to Richard F. Crabbs their heartfelt gratitude and admiration for his more than seven years of selfless, constructive and inspiring service and leadership as Dean of the Faculties; and the Trustees wish to commend particularly his singular contributions to the great strengthening of the Faculty and the substan­tial elevating of academic standards which took place during his tenure; and finally, the Trustees extend to Dean Crabbs their very best wishes for continuing success and fulfillment as he leaves a -truly grateful University and one which is far better because of him. President Thoron moved to an explanation of how candidates to fill the post had been nominated and screened. A number of candidates were considered and ultimately all were rejected -for one reason or another. President Thoron said that he had not involved the Trustees nor the Facul-ty initially but he would be very glad to have Trustees propose candidates. As to faculty involvement in the selection of the new dean, President Thoron said that as the ' dean is the academic officer and reports to the president, that the president should select him. He noted however that before any candidate is finally appointed he would be brought to Cairo and would be exposed to the Faculty and that no candidate to whom the Faculty had sub-stantial objections would be appointed. President Thoron said that in his view there is no need to rush to fill the deanship on a permanent basis because Dr. Cecil Byrd has consented to fill the post for an interim period not to exceed two years. This will enable the University to find the best person for a long term appointment. If the University finds a permanent dean before Dr. Byrd's two-year interim appointment expires, . D~.
