, I 1 SUMMARY REPORT ON STAFF AND STUDENT HOUSING APPENDIX A: At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board on August 3rd, the President was asked to prepare a brief report on staff and student housing. The following sUmmarizes what we are doing and what we plan to do. The University strives to offer every foreign staff member recruited abroad on fixed term contract, suitable housing at inexpensive prices. The staff member, of course, does not need to occupy University housing ; but given the shortage and the rapidly rising price of housing, nearly all eligible members choose to do so. The University does not make available housing for Egyptians or long- term residents in the U.A.R. The Faculty housing program is an aspect of our general program to ease the transition of foreign staff members into their new environ­ment in Cairo. Nothing can get a new staff member off to a worse start than to face the perplexities of Cairo housing hunting when he first arrives. At the present time the University has leases in its name for 66 villas and apartments - either furnished or unfurnished. In addition 16 foreign staff members lease villas or apartments, furnished or unfurnished, in their own names.
