This project will not only make accessible for University use all the materials written in Arabic and other languages about the Middle East, but will supply these data in useable form to other libraries and research centers in and be­yond the Middle East. As a further supplement to the docu­mentation service it is essential (as more extensive work is undertaken on the graduate level) that the University secure the accumulated and continuing current materials of the "Human Relations Area File," a project of the last ten years, centered in New Haven. The American University at Cairo Press was organized in 1960 to stimulate writing and publishing on the part of the University staff and of graduate students, to carry out the various printing and publishing activities of the University, and to contribute to the attempt to meet the need of the United Arab Republic for scholarly reports, analyses and materials. While the publications of the Press should always be more inclusive than the research efforts of the University, it none the less is obvious that as the graduate program develops, and as such special services as the Documentation Center increase in significance, the Press will also have new demands placed upon it. University excellence requires greater responsiveness to the multicultural character and opportunities of the University. The purposes, program, personnel and location of the Univer­sity will naturally support any effort the University makes to be more responsive to its multi-cultural character. In fact, if the University does not take these opportunities more seri­ously, it will be missing one of the great "by-product" chances to make a major though indirect contribution to the current world.
