REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY 1953-54 As a service station on the A.U.C. road, your Philadelphia office strives to do whatever facilitates travel and accommodates the traveler. v,e seek pros-pective teachers, and speed them on their way to Cairo. e offer encouragement and assistance to our alumni who come here for graduate studies and to our faculty on furlough. We are not discouraged by weaknesses in the mechanics, wiiether human or other. We coöperate with all persons and organizations who will further the University's progress. Our program is education thrcu h service. =3ut unless our service conveys basic Christian witness in the field of education, we shall not be doing our part to better the world's moral standards, ethical insights, and spiritual power. It is these attributes that T•re strive to foster in our students, our staff and ourselves, In facing the current cauldron of the Near East, it helps us to evaluate our work if we can see it through the eyes of others. Such a glimpse is give:. by Mr. Gardner, who is now on furlough at Princeton, in his report of last year's academic program in the Division of Jxtension: "e do not have all the answers. . .we are, after all, a 'foreign' institution. . .we are interested in helping to turn out men and women with sufficient dedication to have the will to look for answers; sufficient understanding to find answers; and sufficien'. integrity not to be satisified with half-answers." Our by-laws specify that one or more General Secretaries shall serve in and from the Philadelphia office. 'ale understand our function to be carrying ou the policies and giving effect to the decisions of the Board of Trustees, undir the guidance and direction of the President, channeling communications between the field and home, and doing everything possible to promote the welfare of our institution in its unique mission. As prasently organized, one of these secretaries has general responsibility for administration and recruiting, and is designated Executive Secretary. Another, as Comptroller, does the accounting, purchasing, recording and filing. Our Promotion Assistant completes the trio, seeking to raise funds especially through the techniques of publicity, public relations, and personal solicitation. (In the office we have one full-time stenographer and from one-half to one-and-a- half in addition, depending on the work-load.) To regularize this set-up, I suggest that the Board take action to go on record, or perhaps modify the by-laws, by providing that the current designations of the General Secretaries be as indicated. The attached chart is a first attempt to visualize our organ-izational structure, here and abroad. During the past year, two meetings of the Board and 15 of its committees have been held. Four new teachers were recruited from 38 applicants out of lie inquirers. My wife and I were happy to attend the Lincoln University charter day convocation in April, where t represented A.U.C. Early last month Dr. Harold Smith, former teacher, represented our University at the inauguration of the new president of Western College for Women. Altogether, Mr. Blumberg, Miss Lister and I made 62 trips in the interest of our work to 13 cities and called on 210 individuals. Some 20 persons representing organizations presently or potentially interested in A.U.C. were interviewed, and ?3 others were aonrcacho 1. by letter. Arrangements are in progress for largo groups of tourists to visit A.U.C. this winter.
