l REPORT OF THE EDUCATIONAL SECRETARY TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES JUNE 1956 Monthly reporte of my work as Educational Secretary have been made to the Univers-ity president. At his request, I an happy to make a summary statement to the Trustees about the activities in which I have been engaged in order "to advanoe the total in-terests of the University." To guide me in the performance of my duties, I have had the "statement of function" of the office supplied to me in October by the President oliowing our oonversations in the summer about what might be undertaken. For this reporte I follow the major headings of the "statement of function". EDUCATIONAL PROMOTION has inoluded oorrespondenoe with, and visits to, universities and dôTegesóm ake known the programs and facilities of AUC 4 in particular, the development of the Graduate Faonly and the Junior Year in Egypt also I have been seeking soholarship openìng6 for gra3€ tes and any possible means of cooperation. With one or two foundations and ediloational organ` rations, I have had some results in gaining advantages for AUG and ogler promising leads. For strengthening ties with those who have been related to us as students or staff ::embers - a group with great pntentia , for advancing AUC interests in A;nerioa « I have ^rganized, with the help of Miss Lister, the Cairo dinner in January in New York, the AUG supper in March in Washingon,* the Bairam Tea in May also in New York. A very considerable oorrecpo denoe has boon carried on in the interests of gradu-ates for soholarships and o h©M matters, Ill Besides attending the meeting of the Association of American Colleges in January, I have been a ropresentative at the oonferenoes of the Amerioan Friends of the Middle East,, The Middle East Institute, the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, the National Assooiation of Foreign Stud©nt Advisors, The Council on the Junior Year Abroad. CHURCH PROMOTION has been attempted by correspondence with former staff members who have pastorates, and with some pastors who have visited Egypt in reöent years. Results, by way of assurance of support, have boon almost negligible so far. With several fronds and church leaders I have discussed the question of getting some part of our budget underwritten by a group of ohurohes and religious organizations. Clearly it is going to take a long time, and will perhaps require a difforont kind of approach, to get any considerable support such as I had suggested in my January report. In general, pastors feel so burdened with denominational pressures and local demands that they are reluctant to commit themselves to now undertakings. I have boon urged to attend the World Missions Conforonoo at Silver Bay next month as a likely means of discovering now loads and directions for this typo of promotion.
