1 TEACHERS WEEK Appendix to Page 202 (31) i By George Gardner This is the third year in which we have tried to organize a series of evening programs for the benefit of the some 2000 teachers who gather in Cairo from all over Egypt during June to correct state examinations. This third year seems to oonfirm our idea that we oan offer a useful service. Although this year's total attendance is shown as 719 as compared to last year's 890, it must be noted that there was a fifth session held at the Rowad Headquarters which was an integral part of our program and which was attended by about 80 teachers. It must also be noted that the teachers were on strike during this time and spent much time in attending mass meetings. This year's program was jointly sponsored by the Rowad, the Association of Social Workers, and our Extension Division. This was done because we wanted to present three different types of material. The Fouad leaders spent several weeks in advance in developing outlines of eight basic problems found by the seoondary school teacher and in training discussion leaders. These basic problems were then presented through a panel discussion by outstanding men in the field of education. Then followed an evening during which the audience divided itself into committees to discuss these problems. During a third evening the committee chairmen reported back to the whole group. One evening was sponsored by the Association of Social Workers discussing the new factor in secondary education in Egypt - the placement of social workers in the schools to work on character development and personality, adjustment among students. These sooial workers have found great difficulty in being accepted by the schools. They have too often been resented and misunderstood and we felt that a useful purpose would be served by having the whole problem discussed. Our own Division presented a program devoted to audio-visual materials and techniques. Ghali Amin gave a lecture on this subject and illustrated it by means of a variety of class-room films, a class-room play, a book exhibit and an exhibit of visual materials produced by the students of a Model School (see Appendix V in file) . The idea was introduced by calling this Teachers Week a Teachers Workshop but we don't know whether this will be favorably received or not. The results so far encourage us to additional efforts next year. (As stated different times above, the appendices are attached to copy in file.
