184 (a) The Youth Union: Two conferences were conducted by this group under the joint chairmanship of Saleh Enan Pasha and the Extension Division. The general theme was "Our Need for National Goals". Four speeches were given at each conference by popular personalities. Problems of family life, hygiene and children were among the topics which were discussed (cf. App. III). This type of program always draws big crowds especially from among the Azharists who think four speeches worth the time and energy sacrificed for attending a meeting. The average attendance was 575. (b) Students Union of the Faculty of Law: The increased number of the educated unemployed Egyptians has raised the question whether University education should be limited to a fewer number 'of persons. Many leaders took sides in this question. In an effort to throw light on the subject, a debate was organized jointly with the Union of the Faculty of Law on the subject, "Resolved that Egypt should make Uni-versity Education Available for All." Two lawyers and two teachers in the Faculty of Law took part in the debate (of. App. III). Mohamed Aly Allouba Pasha, an old friend of the institution and an outstanding leader, presided and gave prestige to the debate. Allouba Pasha and many others remarked that in no other institution would debates end so successfully and in so orderly a manner. A reference was made to a debate given one week earlier than ours in the hall of the Egyptian University where the debaters had to withdraw in the face of the hostile attitude of the opponents. (c) The Ministry of Public Health: One of the most successful events of the year was the three dramatic performances given by three different departments of the Ministry of Public Health, with the cooperation of the Division of Extension. The cooperation was a result of a cordial letter sent by the President to the Minister of Health, congratulating him on sixtieth birthday, an occasion celebrated by the medical group in appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Aly Pasha Ibrahim for promoting health conditions in Egypt. In his letter, President Watson expressed the willingness of the American University to cooperate in any way within its capacity in the promotion of health conditions in Egypt. The Minister responded favorably to the President's suggestion and appointed a committee to discuss with the Division of Extension ways and means of cooperation. It was agreed to give dramatic performances featuring the causes of the wide-spread diseases and emphasiz-ing means of prevention. The Ministry asked each one of its Departments to produce a play that would help the public understand its problems and cooperate in solving them. Each Department competed to produce a more effective play than the others. However, as the program started only in May, we were unable to have more than three performances, one a week dealing respectively with Typhoid Fever, Infant Mortality and Malaria (cf. App. III). The success of the performances, measured by the effect on the audiences and the number in attendance was beyond expectations, the average attendance being 76 6. The message of the plays even went beyond our Hall, in that two of them were broadcast by the Egyptian State Broadcasting company on its main station, which can be heard clearly throughout all the countries of the Near East. The Ministry took charge of writing the plays and securing the players, most of whom were officials of the Ministry. We took charge of publicity and organization. Special invitations were issued in the names of the Minister of Health and the Pres-ident of the American University. Ordinary invitations were issued in the name of the Ministry of Public Health and the Division of Extension. The Ministry printed a summary of each performance and distributed it to the audience. The President's suggestion to make a moving picture of the plays to be exhibited in the villages were received by the higher officials of the Ministry with great enthusiasm and arrangements are being made to execute the plan. The success of the experiment promises popular programs in the future and we are looking forward to continued cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health next year
