who handled the subjects. Dr. Bahi el-Din Barakat Pasha, ex-President of the Chamber of Deputies, and Dr. Taha Hussein Bey, Controller of General Culture, Ministry of Education, were among the speakers. At the beginning of each forum, an outline of the subject and a bibliography were distributed among the audience. This increased the liveli-ness of the discussion which followed the delivery of the lectures. Perhaps the most important forum was Barakat Pasha's on "Youth in Politics." Ever since the political movement of 1919, Egyptian students have been interfering in politics with no small effect on their character and their studies. Political leaders, whether in government or out of it, have tried to use them as against opposing parties. There was a great need for some courageous leader to tell the students that they were wrong and discourage their false attitudes. This man was Barakat Pasha, whose sincere advice and frank opinion was carried from Oriental Hall to the Arabic-speaking world through the wireless and the daily press which published his speech in full. The discussion which followed was most interesting. Ex-ministers, present ministers, under-secretaries of state and other leaders were very enthusiastic in discussing this problem; Haikal Pasha, former Minister of Education (who now holds the same post in the present cabinet), tried to defend the students and blame the leaders. Thanks to Ahmed Lutfi el-Sayyed Pasha, the Rector of the Egyptian University who presided on this occasion, the discussion kept very lively and along constructive lines. Once more, the American University has been the most convenient place for the rival leaders to discuss social problems, in a neutral and scientific atmosphere. During the second term, nine forums dealt with various subjects. Two of them were conducted jointly with the "Youth Union Movement." Although the second term forums were well-attended too, the average being 168, yet they did not arouse as much interest as those of the first term. The related topics of the first term seem to have had a greater appeal to the Egyptian public. Besides the careful choice of subjects for the forums and of speakers to deal with these subjects, we have been trying to establish the technique of forums, with a certain amount of success. In each forum, the speaker was allowed 45 minutes, to give his views on the subject under discussion. The members of the audience were given blank sheets on which to write the questions they wanted to raise. These were then handed to the chairman, who sorted them and gave one by one to tale speaker to answer. This provided ample opportunity to clarify any points which the speaker might not have dealt with to the satisfaction of the audience. In some cases the questions were very interesting and added to the value of the lecture. Depending on the subject dealt with, the chairman would give at the end of the meeting per-mission for persons who had constructive comments to make. However, in such circumstances, care was taken to keep the comments relevant to the subject dis-cussed by the lecturer, and not to allow any controversial talk. At each meeting the Secretary, and sometimes the Director, was present on the platform to explain to the audience the procedure to be followed and see to it that the proceedings did not go beyond the time limit of 90 minutes.
