Talking about contacts I wa.s amazed to be asked to attend an educational meeting of a very religious nature, in the Royal Teachers Association. The meeting was called by a political leader from Morocco. Its idea was to link the Mohammedan countries from Persia to Gibraltar through cultural, religious, and linguistic bonds. The audience was composed of higher officials from the Ministry of Education led by the Undersecretary, together with the important ulemas of Al-Azhar. All the speeches including that of the Undersecretary stressed nothing but the legacy of Islam and Mohammedan culture. Out of some hundred persons at that tea I was the only Christian. Still I felt honoured by the fact that even in such a gathering they wanted educational ideas from a Christian who represents a Christian institution. B. The Journal of Modern Education 1. In previous reports a statement was made that the scope of the magazine will remain for a long time limited as far as the number of subscribers is concerned. This is obvious for the simple reason that those who read technical material on educational subjects are only progressive individuals engaged in teaching or school administration. It was also made clear in previous years that the Department of Education does not plan an active campaign which would undouLtedly increase the circulation considerably. This is due to lack of time and money. A practical method of multiplying the number of paid subscriptions will be to send an efficient agent to the most important schools in the country - an effort which needs lots of expenses and a fair amount of planning: Notwithstand-ing these shortcomings the circulation has been increasing slowly but steadily year after year. In 1934-35 we had 503 subscribers, in 1936-37, 712, this year 1937-38 we reached 758. 2. As to printing expenses we have been paying much less, the last three years, than we paid in the pasty despite the fact that the quality of the paper, printing, photographs, and general appearance have improved considerably, to say nothing about the number of pages which is sometimes 50 or 60% more than what was the cost of printing for the four issues:- 1st issue L.E. 24.695 0123.48) 2nd issue L.E. 24.350 (t121.75) 3rd issue L.E. 25.800 (1129.00) 4th issue L.E. 27.250 (t136.25) In 1937-38 the following was the cost of printing for the four issues: 1st issue L.E. 19.350 096.75) 2nd issue L.E. 19.550 (197.75) 3rd issue L.E. 19.000 (195.00) 4th issue L.E. 19.125 (?5.63) In other words there is a difference of more than six pounds Egyptian for every issue. Furthermore in 1928--29 the total expenditure for four issues onlL, plus postage, envelopes, etc. etc. was L.E. 150.000, (t750.00), compared to L.E. 120 (1600), in 1936-37 for four issues, plus a supplementary issue (a ten year index), postage, envelopes, sundries, etc. etc. Our cash income from subscriptions this year is L.E. 112.904 (1564.52) compared to L.F. 88.940 (1444.70) in 1936-37 and L.E. 74.971 (1394.86) in 1935-36. The increase in this year's income is due chiefly to the sale of a number of whole volumes and back numbers.
