99 The Journal of Modern Education has the chance to reach a wider circle of readers than it does now. Gradually it is becoming known more and more. It will soon have the same esteem attached to it as Al Hilal and Al Muktataf. During its second and third years it had a rival an education-al review published in Baghdad. This review no more exists. • In fact our Journal is spread in that region (Iraq) more than in arty other country, if we take into account the number of teachers in that country compared to that in Egypt, Syria, etc. II. The School of Education Owing to lack of facilities, the activities of this section of the Department during this academic year (1932-1933) were limited to the conduct-ing of two classes, one in "Nationalism and Education", and the other in "Philosophy of Education", each given two double periods, twice a week. No attempt has been made to accept new students. The old students who chose to remain were provided for, so that by the end of their third year (1933-34) they would be able to be candidates for their Bachelor's degree in education. Considering that this School has been in a way an experiment, unique in its kind in Egypt, and taking into account the fact that the experiment was attempted in stormy times and after a great deal of hesitation, it will be safe to say th-t the experiment has been a success. The students who are candidates for our degree are holders of the"license" of the Government Teacher Training College. According to the traditions of the country this • "License" is the last word in Education. To be able to find students who hold that "License" arti who are willing to listen to instructors in a foreign institution.is a triulph in itself. Furthermore, we have been under the impress-ion that the question of language would be an obstacle, that the students' knowledge of English would not enable them to follow the technical language of American and English books, and that their previous mechanical training would not permit them to delve into the shelves of the library and skin rapidly the inexhaustible material available. Experience, this previous year, has taught us that holders of this "License" know English enough, and can be taught to make independent research and study that will make their ,stay with us quite profitable. In fact we have been more than gratified with their ability to investigate and study problems, their enthusiasm to discuss controversial subjects wisely in class and their willingness to spend marry hours in the library for study. There is no doubt that the opening of this school cane in such bad times, but it seems a great pity to close it altogether. The question of funds is an obstacle in the way, it- is true; but why should it not be for the time being at least part of the College? It is true that the tendency now is to have Teachers Colleges as separate departments independent of Other departments of the university. Still there are mark universities today that make their teacher training part of other departments. In this case teacher training will be simply like a science department or a history department or the lice. In fact, the schedule should be arranged such, that student teachers could take one or more courses with the College students. Biology, for instance is now considered a prerequisite for psychology. The usual biology class in College could be left open to student teachers. A similar combination could be made in philosophy or Political Economy. In this way, the financial question will be reduced to a minimum
