1 1 311 a reorganization under two sections, where the medical work is cared for private-ly by Dr. Gilbert Ibrahim, a new superintendent, Miss Jackson Bennett, formerly Matron at Assiut Hospital of the American Mission will carry on the welfare work for mothers and children. Before this we hoped to have funds to expand this experiment into a complete community center. Probably transferring it to some village where control would be easier. Our appeal to the Commonwealth Fund to assist in this venture failed to bring a favorable response and we are now look-ing for other assistance. In any complete picture of activity with social institutions, the potent institution of religion should not be forgotten. As soon as we can logically develop this feature and carry our enlarging constituency with us, we desire to inaugurate a Sunday afternoon series of lectures or meetings, dealing particular-ly with religious problems. However, we are loath to begin this until our plan is fully developed so as to avoid tale pitfalls into which devoted but heedless religious leaders frequently fall. During the past year the Division of Extension cooperated with the Near East Foundation in securing the attendance of Dr. Mahmoud Azm5 el Kattan at the Inter-national Conference for the Blind in New York. Dr. Kattan officially. re-presented the Egyptian Government and since his return has been active in organiz-ing an Egyptian Society for the,Blind. We also, through Dr. McClenahan's leader-ship assisted in promoting a movement for the reduction of the cost of living, through an initial reception for Amin Bey Youssef, * who has since been officially appointed by the Egyptian Government and has achieved notable success in bring-ing down cost of food supplies and clothing. One further feature worthy of note is the final acquittal of Dr. Fahkry by the Court of Cassation. Mr. and ►ors. Ralph B. Dwinell have joined our staff r-s permanent members giving most of their time the past year to Arabic study, although they were able frequently to lend a helping hand in administrative work. Mr. Dwinell acted as Secretary of the staff conferences. Mention should be made of the return of Mr. Yoder after three years' service during which period he carried a heavy burden of administration and made many Egyptian friends. The new film on 'Save the Eyes' will stand as a memorial to Mr. Yoder's originality, devotion, and ability to organize a large group of persons of varied interests. We earnestly hope that Mr. Yoder will be able to return to accept a permanent post in the Division of Extension after a period of graduate study in America. By special request of the Board of Trustees, the Director was delayed in returning to Egypt last fall, not arriving in Uairo until mid-November. Dr. McClenahan and Mr. Yoder had made and put in force plans for the current year so that the Director had little to do but drop into his niche and carry on. We wish particularly to refer with gratitude to the Extension help given us last year by Dr. McClenahan particularly in presiding at lectures and other public functions. His advice at our weekly staff conferences and on many other occasions was most welcome and helpful. *This reception was more directly related to cooperatives.
