Due to extreme shortness of funds the University's work at this center is being closed, but Dr. Gilbert Ibrahim is firmly established in a private practice so that our community is being cared for medically. The work at the University's farm began in mid-November and has averaged two days a week since that time, for two months about three days a week. Time for this was taken from the Sayyeda Zeinab Center and it was felt that it was a better investment because of the entire absence of any such work in the country district. Thanks to the special interest of Miss Stradmeyer of Amsterdam, funds are being supplied to continue vil-lage work throughout the coming year, using Eg;, ptian nurses. During the seven years that the Sayyeda Zeinab Center hqs operated, considerable development of child welfare centers has taken place in Cairo. At the time of our beginning there was no such work in the Sayyeda Zeinab district, but now there is a foundling hospital and a children's hospital both operated by the Government within 15 minutes walk from the Center. There is not therefore the saine urgent need for child v,elfare work in this district. The Government has also some 8 other centers in Cairo and Buiza for child welfare. The greater need now remains in the country districts. The past year has been one of great strenuousness as well as of unusual expansion in Extension work and in spite of limited funds and staff the outreach has been much greater than heretofore. I believe that we are now established in the public mind as a substantial institution. The Arabic words "Al Khidma Al Amina" in popular thinking now refer to the American University at Cairo, so many of our friends say. The success of our Extension efforts has been due largely to the fine spirit of loyalty and service which has been shown by. every member of the Division and to them goes the credit for our present standing. Unlimited thanks are due also to the more than 150 persons who gave generously of their time in lectures and committee work.
