The question has been constantly raised as to how much the emphasis of the College should be plr. ced upon its being a thorough-going secu r institution for the type of intellectually prepared men, or should be a College definitely and purely without apologies in definite and unmistakale methods as to the Gospel being the supreme st i..ndard and ideal for one's faith and conduct. In recognition of the Genesis and History of the College, there is no question whatever that the emphasis should be on the second of these positions. Te have experimented along certain lines during the )a.st years and it is our absolute conviction that the Moslem mind particularly at the present time and in its trans-ition is ready and willing to hear what Christianity, and Christinn leaders have to .say. It becomes us, however, to take the stand definitely in the face of certain currents so that the missionary character of the College may be constantly recog-nized, whether in the teaching, Assembly exrcises, or personal contacts with the students. The tremendous pull of the demands for the purely academic education are liable to draw us aside from the original purposes for which the College was established. The methods may differ but the inspiration and leadership of a risen, living and present Christ, must be ours if the College is to meet its function and is to be maintained. PROPOSALS. I have mentioned in various places above, some suggestions, but will refer to them briefly here. (a) Staff. The experience gained these past eight years places our permanent staff in positions of excutive leadership far beyond where they rere in the begin-ning. Those who are remaining with us, are able as Chairmen of groups, and com-mittees, or in other executive offices, to carry a very great load. I speak both of the Americans, Mr. Kiven, and Amir Effendi. Mr. Galt has most efficiently contributed to the meetings of the Faculty and to teaching in the College, although it was understood that he had a responsible position which should take first place in the creation of the School of Education. He is eminently able to carry the duties of the coming year as acting Principal of the College and it is with a. great sense of assurance that I commit these duties to him. The departure of two such remarkably able men as Mr. Harris and Dr. Eddy leaves a serious hole in our staff. Both were men of alert, versatile and constructive minds and took a very large share in the construction of the plans for the College. Dr. Eddy's contributions were not only to the solid work of the English, the foreign language groups, the Hostel, the Alumni, and to every phase of the college life, but his contrïhutions in so many ways outside contribut-ed much to the ;prestige of the College and University. Mr. Harris also hadmany contacts in the city of a different kind and his experiments in the department of Religion and Ethics leave before us marry prob-lems to be solved in the immediate future. The resignation of Dr. Eddy (even with the continuance of Mr. Howard) and of Mr. Harris, calls for two eminently strong ,men, thorough and conservative, and et progressive who can soon take their places on the Faculty. The coming of Mr. Miller, will, we hope, meet the need of a strong man in the department of Chemistry to take the place cf Mr. keete. A strong iman will be needed to take the place of Mr. Garthoff also in so far as the College is concerned, for there are so marry contacts with the teachi nz, staff and the students where there is much opportunity for cooperation and mutual service
