At the head and on the north side of a gulch crossing the bar at about mile 44.6 there is a stock trail leading to the platform above. There are two routes out of the gulch a few yards apart: one consists of ten picked steps, the other of a long slanting notch cut in the sloping sandstone. Both come together in the bottom of a bare rock wash. The trail follows this watercourse out to the top. Horse sign was noted all over Mesken Bar but there was no indication of cattle. Historical site 115 This is a sharply curving bar on the inside of a horseshoe bend on the right bank of the Colorado between mile 37 and mile 38. There are some shallow prospect pits about midway on the bar 60 ft. above the river. The possibility of a ford, centering at about mile 38, between this bar and the opposite left bank upstream has been suggested in the notes under Historical site 116. The survey notes for T43S R6E SLBM, surveyed in 1934 state that this bar is inaccessible by trail from the platform above. UU archeological site (Fowler 1959, 514). Historical site 12-Gunsight Bar Gunsight Bar is a long curving bar on the right bank of the Colorado extending from mile 33.5 to mile 35.2. There is a wide sand terrace at the base of sandstone benches, appearing midway in the bar, and these are capped with ancient gravels. The sand terrace at the extreme upper end of the bar is narrow and extends directly to the cliff wall. The name is taken from the prominent Gunsight Butte (Historical site 10), three miles north-northeast, and appears on the township plats of T43S R5-6E and T44S R5-6E, SLBM, surveyed in 1934, Gunsight Bar has been a mining site and a grazing location. At about the 100 ft. level there are a few prospect pits and claim stakes on the gravel terraces in Sec 1T44R 5E SLBM but no indication of extensive mining operations was found. In 1934, the public land surveyors reported that an "old" water well 8 ft. in diameter was located on the edge of the river at the extreme head of the bar. Although there is a large rock in the edge of the river at mile 35.3 upon which a wheel might be anchored no remains of any kind were found there when the bar was examined March 24, 1959. The surveyors also mention the fallen down wall of an "old rock house" in the NW 1/4 NW 1/4 of Sec 6 T44S R6E SLBM, and the existence of a well with rock walls, 12 ft. deep and 8 ft. in diameter nearby.
