bar upstream 100 yards above a dry wash entering the Colorado at mile 41.3. The platform above Cane Bar is part of the open country extending back from the river, in some places several miles, to an irregular line of cliffs standing above the heads of Kane Creek, Navajo Canyon (Historical site 8) and Gunsight Canyon (Historical site 22). These canyons are the principal barrier to travel across the platform. However, one can easily reach Cane Bar from the trail to Navajo Canyon (see Historical site 8) and the Crossing of the Fathers by turning west-northwest from the point where that trail descends into the canyon, and heading both forks of Kane Creek about a half mile above the mouth before each plunges into a narrow slot of a canyon. The trail crosses the right fork just below Cane Spring, now used as a stock watering point (see Fig. 6). There is some confusion about the usage of Kane Creek: should it be Cane? or Kane? Kane for the creek appears first, apparently, on the USGS River Map Sheets D and E published in 1921 and this usage has been followed on every map I have seen, including the USGS Gunsight Butte Quadrangle dated 1953, except the plats of townships 43S ranges 5 and 6 east surveyed in 1934, where it is Cane Wash. Also, on these plats the names Cane Spring and Cane Bar are used. The curious transposition of the right and left forks of the creek employed on the township plats has been incorporated on the Gunsight Butte quad. It is probable that the township plat "Cane" for the stream as well as for the spring and the bar reflects local usage, derived most likely from the profusion of jointed reed or cane (Phragmites communis, Trin.) growing along the lower course of the stream, and is to be preferred over "Kane" of the USGS River Maps, believed to be mistakenly identified with Kane County, where all three geographical features are found. Cane Bar is a natural camping place. Readily accessible from the platform above, there is grazing on the terrace and good water in the mouth of the creek, easily reached from the bar. The earliest recorded use of it, that has been located, was that of Captain James Andrus and some 30 men of the Utah Territorial Militia who camped there in February or early March, 1866 in pursuit of the Indians who had killed Whitmore and McIntyre the previous December, and to reconnoiter (Tenney 1858-1923; Woodbury 1950, 168-169). Tenney, who had been with Hamblin at the Crossing of the Fathers in 1858 and was along probably as a guide, said, "we camped on the river bank about one mile above the place that Jacob Hamblin entered the Colorado 60Epson Perfection 4870 Photo, 400 dpi, 8 bit, 13,637,632 byte
