Translation with commentary : focusing on culture-bound terms

This thesis comprises six translations with commentary. Excerpts from four books were translated from English into Croatian (A University Education, United States Foreign Policy & National Identity in the 21st Century, Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power, and Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation ), and two from Croatian into English (Sjećanje šume and Faust Vrančić - Portret izumitelja). The commentary focused on explaining the choice of a translation procedure for selected culture-bound terms. Several translation procedures were proposed and discussed for each of the terms. The final choice was motivated primarily by the text type (according to Paul Newmark’s functionalist approach, which distinguishes between expressive, informative, and vocative texts) and the characteristics of the assumed target audience.Ovaj se diplomski rad sastoji od šest prijevoda praćenih komentarima. Četiri su teksta prijevodi s engleskog na hrvatski jezik (ulomci iz knjiga A University Education, United States Foreign Policy & National Identity in the 21st Century, Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power te Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation), dok su dva teksta prevedena s hrvatskog na engleski (ulomci iz knjiga Sjećanje šume te Faust Vrančić - Portret izumitelja). U komentarima je obrazložen izbor prijevodnog postupka za odabrane kulturno-specifične termine. Za svaki je termin ponuđeno i analizirano više mogućih postupaka, a konačan je odabir motiviran prvenstveno vrstom teksta (prema funkcionalističkoj podjeli Paula Newmarka na ekspresivne, informativne i vokativne tekstove) i obilježjima pretpostavljene ciljne publike
