Translation with commentary: with special emphasis on culture-specific items

This thesis comprises six translations with commentary. Excerpts from four books were translated from English into Croatian (David Willetts: A University Education, Kenneth Christie: United States Foreign Policy and National Identity in the Twenty-First Century, Caroline Evans and Paul Smokowski: Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power, and Michael Pickering: Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation), and two from Croatian into English (Damir Karakaš: Sjećanje šume, and Marijana Borić: Faust Vrančić – portret izumitelja). The commentary focused on culture-specific items encountered in the source texts and the problems that arose during the translation. Since these terms are specific for a certain country or culture and cannot be found elsewhere, explanation and addition were the most common procedures used in the translation, along with borrowing, literal translation, lexical creation and substitution. Each culture-specific item is approached individually and the thought process behind the translation is presented in detail.Ovaj diplomski rad sadrži šest prijevoda s komentarima. S engleskog na hrvatski prevedeni su ulomci iz četiri knjige (David Willetts: A University Education, Kenneth Christie: United States Foreign Policy and National Identity in the Twenty-First Century, Caroline Evans i Paul Smokowski: Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power, i Michael Pickering: Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation), a s hrvatskog na engleski iz dvije (Damir Karakaš: Sjećanje šume, i Marijana Borić: Faust Vrančić – portret izumitelja). Glavna tema komentara su kulturno specifični pojmovi koje nalazimo u izvornim tekstovima te problemi koji se javljaju tijekom prevođenja. Budući da su navedeni pojmovi specifični za pojedinu zemlju ili kulturu i ne pojavljuju se izvan nje, objašnjenje i dopuna najčešći su postupci korišteni pri prevođenju ovih tekstova, zajedno s posuđivanjem, doslovnim prijevodom, leksičkom tvorbom i zamjenom. Svakom kulturno-specifičnom pojmu pristupa se individualno i detaljno se prikazuje misaoni proces iza prijevoda
