Translation with commentary: focusing on culture-specific items

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, Spitfire: A Very British Love Story and You Are What You Read: Why Changing Your Media Diet Can Change the World), and two from Croatian into English (Znanstvena istraživanja jezika i prevođenja and Fiumanski, opet lažeš). The commentary focused on different translation problems (such as terminology, sentence structure, style etc.) and different procedures and strategies used during the translation. A special emphasis was put on different culture-specific items and reasons for using specific procedures when dealing with such items were explained. Commonly used procedures for translation of culture-specific items include addition, borrowing, literal translation, paraphrase and substitution.Rad se sastoji od pet prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski jezik (Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones, Spitfire: A Very British Love Story i You Are What You Read: Why Changing Your Media Diet Can Change the World), a iz dviju knjiga s hrvatskog na engleski jezik (Znanstvena istraživanja jezika i prevođenja i Fiumanski, opet lažeš). Komentari su usmjereni na različite prijevodne probleme (kao što su terminologija, struktura rečenica, stil i sl.) te na različite procedure i strategije korištene tijekom prevođenja. Poseban naglasak stavljen je na različite kulturno-specifične elemente i objašnjeni su razlozi odabira specifičnih procedura pri prevođenju tih elemenata. Procedure koje su često korištene za prijevod kulturno-specifičnih elemenata uključuju dodavanje, posuđivanje, doslovan prijevod, parafrazu i supstituciju
