Prijevod s komentarima s naglaskom na kulturno specifične elemente

This thesis comprises five translations with commentary. Excerpts from three books were translated from English into Croatian (Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour, Sociology Beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-First Century and The Age of Living Machines: How Biology Will Build the Next Technology Revolution), and two from Croatian into English (Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka and Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča). The commentary focused on culture-specific items and strategies for rendering them into the target language. The problems that were encountered in translation of culturally specific items, the rationale behind certain translation decisions and other possible ways of translating certain culture specific items are presented. The most predominantly employed translation strategies were foreignization, neutralization and retention with an added explanation. The choice of a particular strategy depended on the type of the text.Rad se sastoji od pet prijevoda s komentarima. Ulomci iz triju knjiga prevedeni su s engleskog na hrvatski (Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour, Sociology Beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-First Century i The Age of Living Machines: How Biology Will Build the Next Technology Revolution), te su dva ulomka prevedena s hrvatskog na engleski (Spomenici otoka Lopuda od antike do srednjeg vijeka i Nasmijati psa i sedam novih priča). U komentarima se stavlja naglasak na kulturno specifične elemente i strategije kojima se oni prevode na ciljni jezik. Predstavljeni su problemi na koje se nailazilo pri prevođenju kulturno specifičnih elemenata, razlozi zašto su određene prevoditeljske odluke primijenjene i drugi mogući načini prevođenja određenih kulturno specifičnih elemenata. Najčešće upotrebljavane prevoditeljske strategije su forenizacija, neutralizacija i zadržavanje kulturno specifičnog elementa uz dodano objašnjenje. Odabir određene strategije ovisio je o vrsti teksta
