Translation with commentary: with special emphasis on terminology

This thesis comprises six translations with commentary. Excerpts from four books were translated from English into Croatian (A University Education, United States Foreign Policy and National Identity in the Twenty-First Century, Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power, Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation), and two from Croatian into English (Sjećanje šume, Faust Vrančić – Portret izumitelja). The commentary focused primarily on terminological issues like translating source text terms that were in a one-to-many relationship with target text terms or recognizing and avoiding false friends, especially partial false friends – words that have several meanings, some of which coincide in both languages whereas others do not. Other themes included the procedures used for the translation of culture-specific items and the translation of unclear source text passages not explainable by the context.Rad sadrži šest prijevoda s popratnim komentarima. S engleskoga na hrvatski prevedeni su izvadci iz četiriju knjiga („A University Education“, „United States Foreign Policy and National Identity in the Twenty-First Century“, „Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan: Playground Politics and Power“ i „Stereotyping: The Politics of Representation“), dok su s hrvatskoga na engleski prevedeni izvadci iz dvaju knjiga („Sjećanje šume“, „Faust Vrančić – Portret izumitelja“). Komentari se u prvome redu tiču terminoloških problema kao što su prevođenje termina iz izvornog teksta koji su u odnosu jedan-prema-više s terminima iz ciljnoga teksta te prepoznavanje i izbjegavanje lažnih prijatelja, napose djelomičnih lažnih prijatelja – riječi koje imaju više značenja od kojih se neka podudaraju u oba jezika, a neka ne. Obrađuju se još i strategije pri prevođenju kulturno specifičnih elemenata te postupci pri prevođenju nejasnih mjesta u izvornom tekstu koja se ne mogu objasniti uz pomoć konteksta
