The teleost family Cichlidae (Teleostei: Percomorphaceae), comprising almost two thousand described species, clearly ranks among the largest fish families. Their outstanding morphological, behavioral and ecological diversity and their propensity to generate adaptive radiations made cichlids prime model systems in various fields of biology.
