Acute respiratory failure (ARF) remains a common pathology in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There will be multiple causes of ARF: decompensations of chronic respiratory pathologies, pulmonary contusions , post-operative surgery in a pulmonary resection, community/healthcare sepsis associated or an respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) associated with other extrapulmonary pathologies. The treatment of ARF depends of the origin. The mechanical ventilation is the necessary support to keep the patient oxygenated while the lung damage causing the damage heals.
