Michel Cartier : Technological, Economie, and Social Aspects of the Diffusion of Cotton in China. In spite of an early introduction during the Han dynasty, the adoption of cotton proved extremely slow until it eventually gained, in the Ming-Qing period, the status of a "neutral" textile fiber equally adapted to rich and poor. The first part of this article is devoted to an evaluation of various factors of resistance, namely the old institutional opposition between silk and hemp as markers of social status, the monetary use of cloths — silk and hemp — accepted in payment for the taxes, as well as difficulties connected with the adaptation of traditional tools to the shorter cotton fibers.
