The textile material and decorative techniques (weaving, embroidery, reserve dyeing) of the various populations listed under the Miao «nationality», are little known in China and abroad. The Chinese Miaos, approximately 6 million people (nearly 60 % in the province of Guizhou) continue to speak many different dialects and their traditional refusal to marry out of their own group has preserved extremely diversified and original customs.
