We are very proud of our students who do so well, and thank the teachers & parents for their help & encouragement. The following will give you an indication of how well our students did. Achievement Exams Achievement exams were written in English, Science, Social Studies and Math. The Province has set a standard for the number of students who should fall within he acceptable standard (PAS) which is 85% of the students who write. Tn our school we reached the PAS in English but fell below in the 3 other exams. We were, however, higher than the provincial average in those 3 exams. In comparing the percent score for these subjects we were higher than the provincial average in all subjects but social studies which we were only 1.2% lower. When comparing the participation rate with the province we were higher in all subjects. We feel our students showed very well and express appreciation to students, parents and teachers for a job well done. Diploma Exams In the Magrath High School we wrote nine diploma exams. They were Biology 30, Chemistry 30, English 30, English 33, Math 30, Math 33, Physics 30, Social Studies 30 & Social Studies 33. The Province has set a standard (PAS) for the number of students they expect will fall within the acceptable standard. This is 85% of all students writing. In Magrath School we exceeded the PAS in seven of the nine exams. Of these seven we had 100% of students reach the PAS but were very close in one of these. In comparing the average percent with the province e we were above the provincial average in six of the nine subjects and just slightly lower in the other three. I1f I J The United Nations General Assembly has declared 1999 the International Year of the Older Persons. The purpose of the year is to foster awareness of the importance of seniors roles in society. We would like to help the community be more aware of the seniors living at the Terrace. We will be featuring two of our residents weekly, so that you may become better acquainted with them. This week we salute: Mary Peterson Mary was born in Taber, Alberta. Mary was blessed with four children & she has fifteen grandchildren & as many great grandchildren. Mary worked 21 years in the post office when her children were in school. She worked at the post office in Warner, she held the office of secretary in many organizations in the church. She loved knitting and canning. Her children loved her pickles. Mary belongs to the L.D.S. Church. She joined the church after she was married to her husband Wilford for a few years, they were married for 57 years. Tony Maasakkers Tony was born in Holland, but came with her family to Southern Alberta 45 years ago. Her husband passed away just before their 55th Wedding Anniversary. Tony was blessed with two children, a boy & a girl. Tony loves to knit, she spends hours just sitting & knitting. One of Tony's favorite things to do is play bingo, she really gets into the game. In her younger years she also loved to garden. I was told Tony's husband had a motorcycle and they would go for rides every Sunday afternoon. They had a side car & it would hold the children. Sounds like fun doesn't it? Tony is alot of fun to have around. She has a great sense of humor & is always willing to participate-in all activities.
