JOSEPH’S “ANNALS &litozLa[ Our first year book from St. Joseph’s, a treasure of the opening of a new school and reminder of friends with whom we once went to school, has finally reached the stage of completion. Possibly more delayed than had been expected, this year book shows a work of pride which has previously been unequalled. The delays, completions and hard work are but scars now of wounds which had been cast upon the year book committee in their efforts to complete the book as soon as possible. School spirit bloomed into a prestige of fervor, and disappointments overcome by hope and achievements gained. However, disap­pointing has been the delay, indeed more disappointing would have been the thought of not having this edition. The year book, as many other school functions, is an endeavor to make our studies in school more play than work. It increases our interest in school and gives us experiences of the difficulties we must face when school in finally over. Our first St. Joseph’s Year Book indeed bears more treasures than other articles of literature. It contains memories of anticipation when we were told that our new school would soon be completed. We tried, in vain, to think of the name by which it would be called but finally found out two weeks before the opening that “St. Joseph’s” had been chosen. Celebrations pass into review as we remember “the blessing,” “the opening” and at last “the entry”. We thought a great deal of our new school, well-pleased indeed to see such a spacious auditorium. Our studies were greatly slowed down as new fascinations dazzled our eyes. This year too, saw a great increase in sports interests as St. Joseph’s ventured into the basketball field. Everyone agrees that we did very well for the first time at the game. We saw more on the softball diamond, as the interest was keener in a more general way. Social functions for the most part were very successful. There is, perhaps, a lot of room for im­provement in the line of social functions, but this will be left to next year’s council which shows promise of promoting even more and bigger functions. With pride we now boast our first year book. At typing and shorthand we know she excells, And at other things too, so Robert tells. ARMIDA BRIDAROLLI— Striking and pleasant is this Italian lass; She’s loved by all, in and out of the class. At bowling each week, we find she’s a star, And as a nurse she’ll be away above par. PAT CASH— Brilliant, attractive, graceful and neat, According to Byron she can’t be beat! She’s hired by Kresge’s, since they know it will pay, To have her sell candy each Saturday. LAURA COSTANZO— Italian and tiny, clever and trim, It’s certain to her, life will never seem grim. To be a capable steno. is her highest aim, In this she’ll succeed, and acquire much fame. ROBERT COSTANZO— Only a golden head, Curly and soft, Disturbs Robert our Pres., Quickly and oft’. ESTELLE DEMERS— A French professor we think she should be. But with this we’re afraid she doesn’t agree. At basketball, bowling and fastball too, She accomplishes more than most others do. ELIZABETH FEKETE— Charming, tidy, clever and small. At Woolworth’s we’ll find her, smiling for all. Hiring her, we’re sure, will be worth your fee, When she’s the competent nurse she hopes to be GLADYS HOUDEK— We see her each day in the kitchen at noon Making a soup which for us is our doom. She knows not what next year will bring, But we wish her luck in everything. ROBERT HOMULOS (Flemmie) — Ronnie is our serious lad. Liked and admired by all. Always neat and extremely tidy, Careful, zealous and strikingly tall. JUANITA IRVING— Grade twelve in one year we know she’ll make. Next year, at home, she’ll learn to bake. For a certain butcher in a local store, Unless a violin to her means more. PETER KUTNEY (Scooter) — To congratulate Peter we must, For the unselfish work it took To publish and edit successfully The final St. Pat’s year book. MARGEURITE LIGHTBOUND (Rita) — She’s known as Rita to all in the school. If seen without Laura she’d break a rule. Her father’s car she’s learned to drive, And at nursing next year she plans to strive. MARIE MARTHALLER— Marie can be depended upon To do her very best. With faith that all will turn out right, She tackles each tough and trying test. FRANCES MACDONALD— Friendly and pretty, not very tall, Without a doubt she’s liked by all. But Ray, it seems, she more than likes, Because she’s been with him on all her hikes. JOHN REIVE (Reevsy) — Hark! The mighty hunter, As he totes his loaded gun, In the tiny, cold, grey hours Of rise and set of sun. REMO ROTA (Foto) — No matter how dull or dreary the day, Nor how badly you might feel— Remo can produce instantly, Humor to make your senses reel. BETTY ANNE SALANSKY (Slats) — In language she hopes to specialize, And in that we’re sure she’ll take the prize. As private sec. for Robert and Pete, She’s done a good job, both swell and neat. BILL SLOVAK (Slovy) — On his little motorbike, He rides to school each day. His curriculum never suffers, For he does his work, then has his play. JOHN TAKACH (Jigsy) — John is our mystery man— Intelligent? Oh! Very much! Polite? Indeed, without a doubt! But please, what does he do? Where does he go? VINCENT TOTH— He wears the smartest clothes, That only the tailors prepare. Regard his handsome carriage, Hm-m-m-m----a noble pair! MARY WARD— To Normal she hopes to be going next year. As to whether she’ll make it we have no fear. Her friendly smile and cheerful air, Are in a class beyond compare. Many a man thinks he has an open mind when it is merely vacant.Page 6 ST. But the road must have a beginning, an end, and a direction. Year by year our parents and teachers have gently moulded our characters; carefully channelled our aspirations, and patiently borne each joy and sorrow. Through our eyes they see a new world, a world which they have never seen but for which they have struggled long and hard. This world they gave to us, their youthful successors, not with apprehension but with confidence, and hope with all their hearts that we will use our talents to solve the problems of our day. Are we going to dis­appoint them, or are we prepared to become the professional men and women, the tradesmen and the industrialists? Will we be able to live together, regard­less of race or creed? Are we afraid of hard work, afraid to think for oursleves; too selfish to see the other person’s point of view, to distinguish between right and wrong, and to realize that there are spiritual values which can give beauty to life? Do we know the real meaning of sharing, can we control our tempers, can we adjust ourselves to strange circumstances? Above all are we good losers? If we answer these questions wisely, then a golden opportunity beckons to us; but if we do not, then we contribute to a grave situation indeed; for a nation cannot rise above the vision of her people.—Armida Bridarolli. of i cSafiooC MONSIGNOR HARRINGTON This is your year. At last the goal of your young dream has been realized—Graduation. With pardon­able pride you recall the successes that have marked your course and now you stand on the threshold of life. Silent admiration swells up in the minds of parents and friends. Parents see in you a most fond hope realized. It has, perhaps, been a struggle for them to assist and protect you up to now. Many a sacrifice has no doubt been made by them on your behalf. They have made them willingly and nobly that you may be among this 1950 class. Friends are proud of you. They are happy to see that you have mounted this ladder of success. Tea­chers see in you the reward of their efforts. Your church rejoices to see Her Children advanced in wisdom and age and grace. To you we say: “Con­gratulations!” You step out onto the stage of life. “What is the state in which God wants me?” is the question each one must answer for themselves. Greater suc­cess we all desire for you. Your future we will all watch with interest. You will be the leaders of hu­man interest not many years hence. As Catholics then, your parents, your teachers and your Church, God’s own organization, expects your loyalty. The sacrifices that have been made for you, the princi­ples that have guided you, we hope will not have been made in vain. Society will condemn you for your mistakes just as readily as it would praise you for your successes. You must stand now on your own feet, following the principles your Catholic school has kept before you. That even one of this 1950 class should stray in later life from your Ca­tholic teachings is not even pardonable. Your reli­gion, graduates, will never be a stumbling block for you on the road to greater achievements. If it is, it means that you are not right with. If you remain faithful to your God at your final graduation it will be God Himself who will hand you your di­ploma. That is the achievements we all desire for you. Page 8 ST. (Rl>noronzy Tempus fugit—how time flies, for it seems but yesterday that we offered our con­gratulations and good wishes to the students in the publication of their annual, and on the occasion of holding their formal graduation exercises and yet one full year has pa* sed by. To those who will be leaving St. Joseph’s, may I offer my sincere congratulations on the completion of your high school course. Had it not been for your trust in God, the encourage­ment of your parents, the hard work of your teachers, your own perserverance, determina­tion and hard work, you would have fallen by the wayside, the same as your school friends have done long ago. May your successors coming into St. Joseph’s profit by your example. From now you will have to make your own decisions. Your honesty and integrity will frequently be put to the test. You must apply the knowledge you have learned at St. Joseph’s to your daily life. For at St. Joseph’s you have received a Christian Education and Christian Education spells “character,” and character means to do the right thing at all times in all places. You must always be true to yourself, to God and to your fellow men. Your conscience must be your guide. May you remain faithful to your ideals, your church and your God. May God bless you in all your undertakings. JOSEPH’S ‘ANNALS Page 9 Grade XII History After two months’ parole, the inmates of our cell block were remanded into custody. All old familiar faces, plus two new ones hiding under the names of Gladys Houdek and Janet Reilly, put in an appearance, registered, and were accepted. Deep lines on foreheads and about the eyes showed long years of trying to concentrate on both radio pro­grams and studies. Added to this were grim lines of determination advertising our interest to succeed. Routine set in. President and Vice-President were elected. The Council enthusiastically set up a bowling league, but unfortunately the enthusiasm was only in the Council. The students bowled half­heartedly and by Christmas the league was dissolved. The great migration! Before Christmas we packed our belongings, said “goodbye” to St. Pat­rick’s as our centre of higher education, and moved to St. Joseph’s. No doubt, due to new surroundings and our first try at basketball, attendance was ex­cellent, at least for the first two weeks. However, basketball wasn’t the only new activity enjoyed by us. A new bulletin, edited by Frank Tarnoczi and Mr. Joevenazzo, carried reports on council activities, sports news and gossip among the student body. All in all this has been a year of “firsts”. It was the first time a President was re-elected, but it was also the first time a President resigned. We were the first graduating class from St. Joseph’s. This St. Joseph’s annals is our first year book in this school. There we were crawling all over the place trying to gain a home­stead at the back of our domain. Don’t ask me why. Seems kinda useless but oh what fun! Looking around there are still the same old faces, wiser of course, with wisdom beaming from their beady little eyes. Why the sudden bright light? Seems the Northern Lights have sent us a little moonbeam who has just breezed in. We knew by his ear-muffs. It was evident now that the hockey season was intact. Of course we have our potential stalwarts just like “Bush” but didn’t realize it. Then one day everybody packed up and left. Oh it was so sad. We shed so many tears it caused the Red River flood in Manitoba months later. Where were we going? Why where else, but to that new house or should I say hill. We have some beau­tiful basketball forms in our room. If you don’t be­lieve me, just ask “Boris”. Seems to me a new game was invented on those bus trips. Funny, I can’t re­member what they called it. I won’t ask our teams what the results of those last games were—too sad, too sad. After ten days relaxation (? ? ?) at Easter, we again made way over the hill to our little ole’ nest. Festival week drew closer. It had its trials and trib­ulations, especially when one arrived fifteen min­utes late. The week came—why were so many friends interested in music, hmmm! The shows were well liked anyway. Then one dreamy English period somebody said: “Wakie, wakie, rise and shine; When shall I read those books of mine? For to report on them I must, Or five credits, poof!—bite the dust. Plowing through six or seven books, some as dry as our English essays, was quite a task, for one month. However, by working like the ants we re­semble (in more ways than one) we managed to make a little progress. The end of the year was drawing nigh, and to our dismay we found refills were as hard to find as hen’s teeth. Some people can’t seem to spare a nickle. Ah, what’s the use! SHIRLEY ANN HACKETT and PAT IRVINE Humor ? Hubby had been out of work for some time, but one day he returned home, smiling happily. “Well, had any luck?” asked his wife. “Yes, Mary dear”, said the husband. “The tide has turned. I’ve secured a good job as night watch­man at last.” His wife shook her head despondently. “There, I knew something like that would hap­pen,” she said. “Here I have been working all the week making you a couple of nightshirts and now you’ll be sleeping all the daytime!” * * * A Chinese bothered by a toothache, phoned his dentist for an appointment. “Two-thirty,” answered the dentist. “I know tooth hurty,” said the Chinese laundryman, “but what time I come and get him out?” Page 12 ST. The Graduation Prom, was drawing near, The girls drew ’round in council for fear That for the day they’d be without a date. Unescorted at the Prom! What a fate! The boys were called to open meeting, The speaker spoke no friendly greeting, As he announced: “You boys are slow, If to the Prom, with a date, you wish to go.” “Take my advice, get on the move! Line up a date—get in the groove! For time, indeed, is running short, And those girls must go with an escort!” The boys took the hint and moved quite fast, All got dates from first even to last. Successful was the dance and feast; No one was sad, not in the least. Thankful are we, to the Home & School, For when their efforts they did pool, To make this Prom, such a grand success, No Grad was left in distress! O^OHt/er Do schoolroom activities determine voca­tions? If so, the result will be queer occupations! Charles will become an experienced door- opener. Theresa will be an instrument loaner. Dennis a prompter in math, will be. And Ellis for jokes will be asking a fee. Now, if these predictions of mine are true— What in the world will become of you? —Rosalyn Sirovyak. A long-winded speaker, after holding forth for hours, pulled out his watch and looked at it. As he did so, he heard someone in the audience shout: “There’s a calendar right behind you.” * * * The gravediggers, we hear, have organized. They are taking out cards with the C.I.O. Canners’ and Packers’ Union. * * * The only way to kill time is to work it to death. * * * A youth came to a farmer to borrow a lantern. At first he refused to say why he wanted it, but eventually confessed that he wanted it to go court­ing. The farmer was scornful. I did my courting without a lantern,” he said. “Yes,” replied the youth, “and look at your missus!” * * * Mamma Skunk was worried because she could never keep track of her two children. They were named In and Out, and if Out was in, In was out. One day she called Out in to her and told him to go out and bring In in. So Out went out and in no time at all he brought In in. “Wonderful!” said Mamma Skunk. “How, in all that great forest could you find him in so short a time?” “It was easy,” said Out. “Instinct!” * * * The angler had just landed a fish when the inquisitive woman chanced to be passing. “Oh,” she exclaimed, “that poor little fish!” The angler replied: “Well, madam. If he’d kept his mouth shut he would not have got into trouble!” * * * Teacher: “Lot was warned to take his wife and daughter and flee out of the city. Lot and his wife and daughter got safely away.” Student: “What happened to the flea, ma’am?” * * * An employer called his men to place before them plans for better working conditions. “Now, whenever I enter the shop, I want to see every man cheerfully performing his task, and therefore I invite you to place in this box any sug­gestions as to how that can be brought about.” A few days later he opened the box and took out a slip of paper containing this message: “Take the rubber heels off your shoes.” * * * After all is said and done, more is said than done. * * * Some people will believe anything if it is whis­pered to them. * * * The teacher was explaining to the class the meaning of the word “recuperate.” “Now, Tommy,” she said, to a small boy, “when your father has worked hard all day, he is tired and worn out, isn’t he?” “Yes, ma’m.” “Then when night comes and his work is over for the day, what does he do?” “That’s what mother wants to know,” Tommy explained quickly.- -—Page 14 ST.
