The floor at the school’s Tom Karren Gym is being re-sanded and refinished and new administration offices are being built. “It won't be quite done for the start of school, but it will be close,” said junior/senior high school Principal Roger Baldry. Right now work is being done on administration offices for the junior/senior school. The new offices are located just off the Tom Karren Gym hall. In phase two, which hasn’t started yet, work will begin on offices for the elementary school. When work is finished the elementary and junior/senior high school will each have their own administration offices Workers preparing the floor of the Tom Karren Gym for reflnisbing. instead of having to share. One of the major changes to the school system won’t even be noticed right away by parents or students. Westwind School Division will soon be using a new student record system for things like attendance, grades and behaviour. Although much work and staff training remains before the system is completely functional, eventually, the web-based program will enable parents to get information about their children over the Internet, said Baldry. “Parents will be able to access much of their children’s information over the web,” he said. Once we have 20 users the rate for all will go down to $39.95 Looking south toward the Tom Karren Gym are the new Jr. /Sr. high school offices and the new Alternate School classroom. a classroom reserved specifically for the Westwind Alternate School taught by Thaine Olsen, said Baldry. This classroom is located just north of the new Junior. / Senior high school offices. On the elementary side, last years three grade one classes are being combined to create only two Grade two classes. Also, the computer teacher, Mrs. C. Andrews, has gone to the Northside Elementary School in Raymond. These changes do not affect the remaining staff as teacher Joanne VanMaarian will be on maternity leave and Mrs. L. Dorner will be the computer teacher as well as teaching Grade 5 in the mornings. The following is a list of the Elementary School teachers and their class assignments for the new school year. Beck ♦ DSC Deep South Cloggers Alternate School Goes In-house Westwind Alternate School has been in operation at the Magrath High School for the past 3 years on a part time basis. This is the first year that the teacher associat­ed with the program will be at the school full time. Besides the Outreach Program that Thaine Olsen runs, he will be teaching a course at the high school. What is Westwind Alternate School? It is an Outreach Program for high school students up to age 20. There are 3 basic reasons a student would use the Outreach Program. 1 - If there is a course a student would like to take, but can’t fit into their schedule, or the school doesn’t offer it, they can approach Olsen and try to work out their needs between him and the principal of the high school. Flexibility is built into the existing pro­gram through correspondence courses or through other means. 2 - A person mav have left school earlier and return. 3 - Students who have been expelled and want to get back into the system. At the Magrath High School, Olsen had been work­ing with students in the library and sees the use of a classroom as a positive move. Co-op pumps will be taken out in the fall when the water is turned off for the season. The Town’s obligation to pay the power costs on the co-op pumps ended on July 31, 2003 when the pump station was completed. • The Town will get an outside source to trench the ball diamond at the Fish Pond for underground sprinklers to be operational by next spring. • Soil farming is to begin in the next couple of weeks on the Carter Garage property. ♦ Obituaries DEE LEISHMAN beloved husband of the late Leitha Leishman of Magrath passed away on Wednesday, the 20th of August, 2003 at the Magrath Hospital. He is survived by his five children. Dee was born October 22,1921 at Magrath, the youngest son to William Leishman and Sarah Parkinson and married Leitha Miller on March 12,1947. The Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Garden Place Chapel in Magrath on Monday, August 25th, 2003. Interment in the Magrath Cemetery. lyior Johnson, son of Wade & Heather Johnson, returned from the New Hampshire Manchester Mission on Aug. 22nd and he spoke in 2nd Ward last Sunday. WE LOVE YOU PAPA by Chantel Saxon & Malerie Lance (Grandchildren) Letter to. tU Editor r To the Editor; This is just a note to thank you for last week’s front page article by Ron Williams encouraging us here in Magrath to support our local businesses. This is an issue I have felt very strongly about for some time now. I have lived in Magrath for almost 7 years and have learned over that period of time that I can really do almost all my shopping and business here in town if I choose to. I have discovered that buying local saves time and more often than not, money, as well. I don’t know anyone who can walk into Costcoand buy a lone jug of milk. My milk may cost a few7 cents more here in town but I can usually leave the store with the milk and change in my pocket. We are often buried under an ava­lanche of flyers encouraging us to get in our cars and drive to the big box stores to spend our money. There is nothing more frustrating than chasing a flyer sale only to discover that the item is unavailable or sold out. The truck is always arriving tomorrow but they never really know what is on the truck anyway. I have learned if there is something I really want, it probably can be ordered at the Trading Company for very near the flyer price. Most recently, my daughter wanted hot rollers for her hair. I had looked in Lethbridge and priced out a number of different sets and decided that I would wait for another paycheck before picking them up for her. The next day I was at the Hardware when I noticed a set of hot rollers by the till. Out of curiosity, I bent down to check the-price. Imagine my surprise when they were $6 less than the best price in Lethbridge!! I bought them on the spot and went home to calculate my savings $6 for the curlers, $8 for the gas and about 3 hours for the trip to Lethbridge. The Magrath News is interested in hearing what you have to say regarding shopping locally. Please share your experiences and comments in a courteous manner. If you have suggestions to encourage local shopping please include those as well. Local businessmen are also encouraged to add their voice. I often shop the Trading Company for unique gifts for family and friends. There are all kinds of gizmos and gadg­ets, plus the free gift wrapping. I have rarely wrapped a gift since moving to Magrath. I also have bought many appli­ances and tools at the TC. If it’s not in the store, it can usually be there in less than a week and often at very competi­tive prices. In the spring I decided I wanted a new microwave. I described what I wanted on a visit to the TC on a Thursday afternoon. The next Tuesday, I saw John at the post office and he said, “Are you going to come and get that microwave?” I had not expected him to find one so quickly and definitely not for the excellent price I ended up pay­ing - about $30 less than the exact same oven at an appliance store in Lethbridge! These are just two examples of my positive experiences at the TC. My positive experiences are not just limited to the TC. Many of the busi­nesses in town have surprised me with nothing short of amazing service. I doubt that there is anywhere in Lethbridge where I could get my flat tire fixed and my car delivered to my door like I can with the guys at the Co-op. When I needed a new window for my basement, the local, Custom Windows and Doors business had it for me imme­diately. When my van makes a funny sound or the locks won’t work there are local mechanics who take the time to listen to me and fix the problem without trying to sell me hundreds of $$ in addi­tional repairs. I enjoy not having to wait in line to buy gas and now that the Blue Goose has soft ice cream I can’t see any reason to stop any where else! I felt funny about calling the pharmacist at home to fill a prescription but Arlen has no problem offering that sendee to the community. The Pharmacy has also been a surprisingly great little gift shop!! When I apologized for returning my video rental a few minutes late, the guy at the rental place forgave the late fee. When my daughter in Idaho needed a driving abstract, I was able to get it right here at Holland’s in a flash. It is so easy to do business with people who know who you are. Before I ever pull out the yellow pages, I check the local business directory to see what’s available here in Magrath. Whether I need garden seeds, bedding out plants, a hair cut, carpet cleaning, or an electrical outlet installed, 1 can usually use a local business to meet my needs. I have used many of the local businesses and services over the years and have never been disappointed. I have not abandoned the big box stores entirely. I may actually keep Costco in business single handedly. But I have made a commitment to support our local businesses. I truly believe that the businesses we enjoy here in Magrath are like local treasures. Our friends and family that visit Magrath are always awestruck with what our little town has to offer. This summer we even had friends come out from Lethbridge for Chinese Food and a change of scenery. They’ve been back twice now!! I would encourage everyone here in our community to save a tank of gas this next month and enjoy shopping, eating out and doing business right here at home. I don’t believe you’ll be disap­pointed. Zom Smart Magrath I New Look for LDS Campground Existing Camp facility located below the hill east of town. Big changes are in the works for the Magrath L.D.S. Stake Campground. Envision below the hill on the east end of Magrath, a lovely treed area with underground irrigation to keep the grass and trees green and growing. Plans are to fashion the campground similar to the Spring Glen Park located between Hillspring and Glenwood. As the Magrath campground now is, without irrigation, it is so difficult to keep maintained. L.D.S. Stake President, Wes Balderson, has confirmed that the Church has approved major upgrades and will be providing the necessary money. This dried out piece of land will be turned into a proper facility that will be available for any group of people to enjoy. At the present time, architects are busily at work finalizin; the plans for it and the Stake soon hopes to have an artist’s conception of the Campground available. There are a number of upgrades that are proposed to be included in the plans: • Eating Pavilion • Amphitheater • Underground irrigation system hooking into the town’s irrigation system • Washrooms with flush toilets • Lots of trees • Tent pads • Playing field / sports activity area Excavation is to begin this fall. The entrance to the campground will most likely be moved to the south end of the property in order to expand the size of the hay field. The revenue generated from the field will go towards the upkeep of the campground. This will be a high calibre facility used not just by the Magrath L.D.S. Across the road from the first dance hall, close to the present tennis courts, Warren and Desmonia Harris raised 5 children (one died quite young). Back then there was no cost for admission to dances, but after a set of dance numbers a fellow came onto the floor with a rope tied to his arm with another guy holding the other end. Rounding everyone up, they charged 10 cents for the next dance. Noticing the great success of the first dance pavilion, another was built east of the Bank of Montreal on Har ker Ave. Both dance halls were doing great but according to the Harris’, LDS church authorities thought they were too rowdy so another pavilion, with a bit milder atmosphere, was built west of the old assembly hall. The ice skating rink was a blessing to the rather poor Harris family. One day Warren had the superb idea of selling hot dogs to the ice skaters cveiy night. All day long Desmonia baked hot dog buns and Warren bought wieners from the Magrath Trading Company where he worked for 27 years. Harris hot dogs sold for 10 cents each. One year they earned a tremendous $3.3 in profits from their hot dog sales (Ugh! The thought of baking thousands of buns for only $33!). When their property tax bill came they owed exactly $33. Ten cents was probably the going rate for most tilings back then. Ten cents bought flour sacks which Desmonia made into quilts, sheets and underwear. For ten cents one could also ivatch Warren win three provincial lightweight wrestling championships in 1926, ‘27 and ‘28. “One needed to be exceptionally self-sufficient in the Dirty Thirties or your family would go hungry,’’explained Warren. “Everyone had chickens and pigs even in town and you needed a cow for your milk and cream.” Every morning the Harris children drove their cow to the town round-up Desmonia and Warren Harris with their four children and then the cows were driven out to pasture where the golf course is now7. Using the town pasture cost about $1 per month. Warren and Desmonia married 69 years ago. Born and raised in Magrath, they lived here until they bought the store and gas station in Spring Coulee. “Those w7ere the hardest years,” admits Desmonia. “There was no privacy. People woke us in the middle of the night for one gallon of gasoline which only cost 48 cents. Plus,” she continued, smiling at Warren, “Warren was so kind-hearted that anyone who came into our store crying with hunger got credit.” Many times they never got their money! Despite the bills, Warren’s motto still stands, “You do one good deed for a customer and they’ll do ten for you.” Ten cents used to buy lots of tilings but it could never buy the love and companionship seen in this wonderful cou­ple, whose shoulders are stooped with hard work but whose eyes still sparkle with delight, as they reminisce about their life in Magrath. ♦ 'Wakeup With JMake-up! TOK-1 JO /^Shorts KITCHEN CONNECTION FOOTBALL The Magrath Wolverines Football program commenced on.Monday, August 25th. The tryouts will continue throughout the week. It is open to all students in Grades 6 thru 9. The first regular season game is scheduled for Sept. 8th. All practices will take place at the football field next to the ice arena. The cost is again $125 for the season. There are 2 divisions - Pee Wee (Grade 6 & 7), being coached by Brad Sabey and Bantam (Grade 8 & 9) coached by Brett Barfuss. If you have any ques­tions please call Dave Clark at 758-3134. VOLLEYBALL Boys High School Volleyball practices for both Senior and J. V. have started. They will be practicing for a few weeks prior to try-outs and the coach, Ryan O’neill would like to encourage anyone interested in join them. “Everyone is welcome, especially the Grade 10 boys.” Practices this week are Mon. - Thurs., 7:30 pm at the school Auditorium. Next week they will be Tues. - Fri. O’neill stresses that volleyball this year, “is about having fun - win games and have fun doing it!” O’neill grew up in Edmonton, married Vicki Strong from Magrath 6 years ago, and moved here with his family about one year ago. He comes with a wealth of volleyball experience haring played throughout his high school years, as well as col­lege intramural and being involved in numerous Volleyball Camps as a participant and an instructor. He loves the game and follows it closely.
