An archive of the Magrath Trading Store News.The University of Lethbridge Library received permission from the Wes Balderson to digitize and display this content.Grads Take Centre Stage Sixty young men and women of the Magrath High School celebrated the culmination of 12 years of work toward their goal of graduation which took place on Friday, May 16th, 2003 at the Tom Karren Gym. And as was repeated many times that evening, “what a good looking bunch!” Their celebration schedule was full, begin­ning on Thursday with a barbecue, hosted by the teachers and then prac­tice for the exercises. Friday included photos, banquet and program, gradua­tion exercises, dance and the after-grad party. Saturday saw the first ever “Super Grad” trip to West Edmonton Mall. At the graduation exercises, the Valedictorian for the class,Steven Dudley, was introduced by Brad Sabey as a “hard working, quiet, gentleman”. Steven had an average better than 93% which with the provincial exams, “is quite an accomplishment”. The class of 2003 can be proud of the amount of scholarship money awarded to them. Mr. Roger Baldry, the principal, announced that at least 55% of the class qualified for the Alberta Rutherford Provincial scholarships. In excess of $90,000 total scholar­ships have been granted with an additional $25,000 in potential American Institution Scholarships waiting to be confirmed. Baldry indicated that this class has succeeded academically as well as in the extra curricular activities. Cathy Pilling was the guest speaker for the Grade 12 graduation exercises. She asked, “Where will you turn for safety in a world that does not necessarily care?" Her response was, "Safety comes from your relationships with others. In the end, it is the people who stand beside you that really matter.” She reminded the Grads that they have learned of trust, promises kept, loyalty and friendships that will follow them throughout their fives. “As you go forward, don’t forget to look back. Home will always be here, and that is a great security.” The after-grad party was held at Ron and Vera Williams’ home with Williams' and Wendy Harris hosting the event. Over 125 grads and friends attended. Vera comment­ed, “The party was very successful, absolutely no problems. What well behaved kids we have. They just played and enjoyed themselves the entire night.” Their activities includ­ed astro-jumping, 4 trampolines, karaoke, a huge bonfire, tons of food, and enough door prizes donated by businesses for all the grads to receive at least one. The only complaint was that it ended too soon, at 3:00 in the morning! From there, a majority of the Grads hopped on a bus heading to West Edmonton Mall. (This trip will be reported next week.) After all the formalities and festivities were over, Tasha Williams, the Class President was asked how it feels to have graduated. After recognizing that school isn’t really over for another month and a half, Tasha said that it feels “really good. In Magrath you go to grad every year and watch and just wait for your turn - it felt so good. It was about time!” As Pilling said in her concluding remarks to the gradu­ates, “May you have every good thing. In the last issue of the Magrath News we ran an article featuring Craig Bennett’s service to the community. It has been brought to our attention that some incorrect information appeared in this article. We reported that Craig was the head of the Magrath Ambulance Service when in fact this position is held by Ken Hoibak. Besides Craig, others have been very involved with the improve­ments and developments of the ambulance, rescue and fire services. We regret any confusion this may have caused. 65 YEARS OF SERVICE To some, service is just a word, but to the Magrath Lions Club, it is a 65 year commitment woven into the history of the development of our Garden City. The Lions motto, “We Serve” has been with this international club since 1954. The Magrath Lions Club’s 65 years of service was celebrated on May 20, 2003 at their Annual Charter Night Banquet. Guests attended from a num­ber of southern Alberta towns, as well as Calgary and even one person from Australia. Local dignitaries included Mayor Wayne Harris and his wife Cynthia. Many Lion dignitaries were also pres­ent including the current Local District Governor Lion Gail Witherspoon and her husband Lion John. Interestingly, Lion Gail lived in Magrath and attended school here for a while with her family when her father was stationed here as an RCMP officer. ■ 4 B ■ **■*' i 1 \ BY £"ILL <■ . fl F ■ • The featured guest speaker for the night was Lion Judge Brian Stevenson of Calgary. Judge Stevenson currently serves as the Assistant Chief Judge of the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Alberta. He is also a long time Lion and a former International Lions Club President (1987-88). As a final surprise (to Ken), Lion Ken Balderson was present­ed with a special Lion award named after the guest speaker, the Judge Brian Stevenson Fellowship award. The Magrath Lions Club was officially created (or Chartered) on May 18, 1938 with Gladstone Balderson, Ken’s father, as the first president. Over the years, the club has been involved in numerous projects and fund-raisers. One of the major accomplishments was the construction of the original Magrath Swimming Pool (now long gone). Today, the Magrath Lions Club remains active. Balderson says that one of this years projects will see improvements to the Lions Playground by fixing and paint­ing existing equipment, and adding new equipment and benches. Some other projects they have recently or are now involved in are; the Lions Youth Exchange Program, Magrath Skateboarding Park, High School Achievement Awards, Magrath Marching Band, minor sports, Town of Magrath highway signs, as well as many other projects. Any money raised by the Club goes right back into the community. The Lions Club is always looking for worthwhile projects to bet­ter the community. What would you say if I told you there was this group who made it their business running around fixing up things for FREE; building and fixing playgrounds, buying trees, cleaning parks and highways and sending off money here and there? What if I told you that that money was just given to sports teams, fire departments, and school groups for equipment and travel expenses? They just a’write a cheque, eh! And they go round a’fund-raising, selling raffle tickets and putting on pancake breakfasts and then just a’give it all away again! And what would you say if I told you I was one of those same fellers? Well, then I’d say yer a’lion. Yep. Pretty sure yer a’lion. Local Lion Honored Congratulations to Ken Balderson for j receiving the Judge : Brian Stevenson Fellowship Award at the recent Lions i Charter Night. He has been an active member of the Magrath Lions Club since 1948, for a total of 55 years of service. Some excerpts from a letter he received from the Director of the Lions in this region state: “...I want to congratulate you on being named a "Judge Brian Stevenson Fellow". As a Canadian I feel it is the highest award that any Lion can receive. ... This recognition is one of the greatest honors that can (be) bestowed in Lionism. The fellowship medal should be treated as a recognition of achieve­ment or involvement. ...Tonight we honor you as an individual who over the many years in Lionism has contributed greatly to the operation of your club and the development of the community to make it a better place to live. Since the date you joined in 1948, you have seen many changes to our great organization and in your community. Norma’s daughter, Sheila Livingston, helps her set up the quilts in the activity room at the hospital, then Norma com­pletes the quilting and Sheila finishes the edges. Norma recently donated two of her quilts to the Hospital Resident Council for Joanne Van Lent, one of the winners of the raffle and Norma Amold(seated) use in a raffle. The money raised went toward expenses for the recreational activities the residents are involved in. The lucky winners of the quilts were Esther Toomer and Joanne Van Lent. The Recreational Department of the hospital wish to congratulate Esther and Joanne and thank all those who bought and sold tickets for the raffle. “A special thank you to Norma Arnold for her talents and Sheila Livingston for her time and patience.” ♦ Obitu John Joseph (Joey) Thomson, beloved son of Gary and Mary Ann Thomson of Magrath, passed away at the Calgary Foothills Hospital on Monday, May 26, 2003. Only personal insect repellents that are registered for use in Canada are recommended, however, prolonged use should be avoided. The active ingredient, its concentration, protection times and use instructions are all listed on each product label. Examples of protection times based on DEET concentration are as follows: 30% = 6 hours 15% = 5 hours 10% = 3 hours 5% = 2 hours When using a product containing DEET, consult the following Health Canada guidelines on DEET safety, which have received blessing from the Canadian Pediatric Society. CHILDREN UNDER SIX MONTHS DO NOT use personal insect repellents containing DEET on infants. CHILDREN SIX MONTHS TO TWO YEARS In situations where a high risk of complications from insect bites exists, the use of one application per day of DEET may be considered for this age group. The least concentrated product (10% DEET or less) should be used. The product should be applied sparingly and not be applied to the face and hands. CHILDREN TWO TO TWELVE YEARS The least concentrated product (10% DEET or less) should be used. DO NOT apply more than three times per day. DO NOT apply to the face and hands. After a great party at Ron and Vera Williams House, 42 grads and 5 chap­erones boarded the Sun Fun Tour chartered bus at 3.a.m. for the Provincial Capital. Laurel Bennett, a chaperone, was just on time getting to the bus as they were packing up the extra food from the party for the trip. "I was pleasantly surprised to see everyone there ready to go. They were like that the whole trip." she stated. Not surprisingly, grads were very sub­dued on the way up as everyone tried to get comfortable on the bus. The bodies trying to sleep on the floor discouraged some from mak­ing the trek to the rest room at the back. We were all glad to get out at Red Deer for breakfast. Since temperatures in Southern Alberta were near freez­ing, it was great to be indoors. West Edmonton Mall has something for everyone. Some grads chose to go to Galaxyland with the largest indoor roller coaster to try. Other grads hit the indoor Waterpark. The wave pool, slides and hot tubs kept everyone busy and showing off those hours at the tanning booth! If you got brave enough to get past the "Blue bullet" you could graduate to the "Sky Screamer" which is as close to a sheer drop as you can get without doing the bungee jump. After all the talk only two grads, Valena Wyght and Amanda Loewer, actually made the "Jump". It was a nice surprise to hook up with the Cardston High Band enjoying the Mall as well. If this wasn’t enough to keep you busy you could always shop, eat and enjoy the unending sights and sounds of the amazing West Edmonton Mall. To end the day the grads met for sup­per at the Outback Steakhouse" and then headed home for good old Magrath. Some grads kept us entertained on the bus by being able to mimic every scene on the Disney movies and they all knew every song. We also kept seeing a red car shadowing us?! One grad, who shall remain nameless, left her retainer at the Red Deer Macdonalds. Fortunately it was on the way up and we picked it up on the way back. The chaperones said the grads were a nice bunch of kids and represented Magrath well. All the grads surveyed had a great time and felt it was a huge success. This group of young men began singing together the Fall of 2001. They have freely given of their time as they sang at hospitals, tour­naments, birthday parties, the Rotary Carol Festival, many church services and most recently, graduation.
