Unfortunately, space does not warrant such thoughts; therefore I would just like to thank and congratulate the entire yearbook staff, from those who wrote the words to those who typed them, from those who took the pictures to those who pasted them. In particular, I would like to thank Mr. Pisko and Paul Morris for spending many long, and sometimes boring hours helping to make this book successful. Finally I would like to thank Mr. Credico and his Business 30 classes for the terrific job they did rounding up sponsors and patrons to help reduce the cost of our book. As the 1981-82 school year comes to a close, I find myself grateful to have been part of the committee which has created this book for you. Few knew what to expect but I’m sure we all feel Mr. T. Fortin has lived up to a challenge. He instilled in us a feeling of pride and self worth, and urged us to achieve to the best of our ability. When we failed, he pushed us forward again, never letting us give up on ourselves. The results were evident this year, as many of our teams won championship titles. Our clubs and committees found valuable insight from his experience in other schools. All in all, we each profited from his knowledge, care and understanding. My first year as Principal of Catholic Central High School has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience due to the efforts and accomplishments of the students, parents and staff. Our school community has grown closer during this year because of the sharing of individual talent and vision. The challenge of the 80’s is focused on leadership and trust. Leaders are not born into this role but emerge because of their need to confront and solve the problem at hand. Many can describe a fault in society, yet few have the courage, faith and vision necessary to lead and earn the trust of a group. Leaders experience a certain degree of inadequacy in terms of their personal ability, yet they should draw comfort: “God regards more with how much affection and love a person per­forms at work, than how much he does.” During a lifetime, each of us will be called upon on occasions to be a leader. As a Catholic leader, you can be assured that Christ will be with you always through personal prayer and the mass as you serve your fellow man. Many leaders in our school and their supporters have made this a memorable year for all CCHS students and staff. This fine yearbook will certainly enhance and retain our memories. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the dedicated yearbook staff and their advisor, Mr. Pisko. Those remaining at Catholic Central will certainly miss the warm and colorful personalities of the graduating class. The staff was certainly impressed by their maturity, humor and dedication as they led the school in various activities. FortinChaplain’s Message Dear Grads: As the angel Gabriel said to Mary at the time of the Annunciation, I now say to all of you, “Rejoice, so highly favored. The Lord is with you.’’ The seed of Christ has been planted in each of you through your baptism. You have been encouraged to nurture that seed through a sacramental life. You have been “highly favored” in receiving a Catholic education. Though you may have questioned it along the way the extra dimension of “Christ with us” saved you from yourself many times. As your Chaplain, I send you forth confident that you will reflect frequently on the reality of “The Lord is with you.” Hopefully some of you may see fit to reply, as Mary did, “I am the handmaid of the Lord.” “Rejoice, so highly favored.” May God’s Blessing continue to be with you in the future. This year’s edition of the Catholic Central Cougars showed a remarkable turnaround from the previous season. The Cougars compiled an amazing 35-2 win/loss record that showed the Cougars losing their first game of the year and the provincial championship final by a single point. Between those losses, the Cougars dominated Southern Alberta basketball with 35 consecutive victories. The enthusiasm of the players and fans made going to a Cougar game a lot more fun. The Cougars will truly miss their graduating players: Shawn Gilborn, Allan Gieske, Tom Pytlarz, and Kevin Kinahan. We wish these fellows the best of luck in their future endeavors. FRONT ROW: D. Fry, D. Martin, D. Rodzinyak. * Coaching Staff. This year’s Catholic Central Cittens, had a very successful season, with an impressive record of 38-2. The Cittens also brought home three out of the four championship trophies from the following tournaments: WCHS/- CCHS, LCI and McCoy. The Cittens won the zone playoffs in Medicine Hat to advance to the 4A Provincial playoffs where they were finalists. Although the Cittens are losing valuable seniors, they have great promise for next year. I would like to wish the next year’s team the very best of luck and I know that with the great potential of the players, the team will do well. With the success of all our athletic teams, a new school spirit is growing. It is my hope that this new spirit will carry on for many years to come. I’d like to congratulate all clubs, teams and committees in the school for representing Catholic Central well and for providing great activities and entertainment for everyone. The year went by perhaps too quickly, but I hope that the hard work and effort of the Student Council proved beneficial to all students. There are many changes yet to be made in our school, but it seems there are not enough hours in the day to complete some worthwhile projects which I had hoped to. I am proud though to have been part of a “team” that worked so very hard to please their fellow classmates. The 1982 graduation committee had a very successful fund raising year, surpassing even their own expectations. The grade 12 students put on various activities ranging from popcorn and bake sales to a dunk tank and a highly successful fashion show. Many congratulations should be extended to all those who contributed to these activities. The year came to a climax with the actual graduation mass and banquet. At the mass, Bruna Zucco presented Fr. Chauvin with a cross to be hung in the new school chapel as a donation from the 1982 grad class. For the first time, CCH has a newspaper that involves everyone. The CCH Chatter is the result of a lot of hard work and good ideas. The “Question Box’’ gave us a chance to have our concerns voiced and our inquiries about CCH answered. “Editor’s Note” has been a fine column, always giving us some­thing to think about. “Chaplain’s Corner” reminds us all of why we’re really here, and always gives us that spiritual ‘lift’. Extracurricular activities always get the acknowledgement they deserve in Mr. O’Brien’s column. The success of a school function relies heavily on the task of informing anyone interested in attending. Mr. O’Brien’s section does just that. Hoveling. * Coaching Staff. 1981 CCHS Cougars The Cougars started the football league this year with a record of six wins and only one loss. With a perfect blend of seniors and rookies, the team started to gel and won their first four games with impressive wins over LCI, Swift Current, and WCHS. After their first and only loss to WCHS, the players worked harder, striving to reach their goal of the League Championships. Beating LCI in the semi-final, they set the stage for the rubber match with the Bulldogs. The team was in high gear; the offense molded into a solid unit; the defense hungry to show that our first victory over the Bulldogs was no fluke. The Cougars started strong, but after a series of penalties they were down fourteen points at halftime. With a blend of pride and endurance they made a forceful comeback, demanding an overtime period to break the tie. Westbrook L. Chanda L. Troman D. MartinValed By Lori CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! We have finally made it to Graduation Night: the night that symbolically ends twelve long years of study and struggle. For some it marks the end of their formal education as they enter the working force to experience a learn­ing of a different kind. For others it is the platform from which we step to further our education. Whichever way our future lies, we may be proud of the solid background we have received from Catholic Central High School. We have come a long way from those first days in Grade One when we did not know how to read or write or even count past ten. It is twelve years later, we are graduates now, and according to the press, we still don’t know how to read or write or count past ten!! It has been quite a few years since we were all thrown together in Grade Seven at St. Mary’s. As a class, we felt the pride of being the oldest, the kings of the school. That pride suffered quite a blow as we entered Catholic Central in Grade Eight; the youngest of what seemed a very large school. We re-gained a little of our stature as we entered Ninth Grade, our final year of Junior High. Together we looked forward to Grade Ten with antici­pation and dread. Anticipation as we entered our first year of Senior High; dread as we doubted our chances of survival through Frosh Week. Somehow we did survive, though I wonder if that wasn’t more of a punishment as we faced seem­ingly endless arrays of Shakespearean soliloquies and ard­uous exams. Throughout the trials and troubles of High School, our parents have stood by us. It was once said that parents are not those upon whom we lean, but those who make lean­ing unnecessary. Whether to soothe our nerves during exam week, or just to sit and listen while we prac­ticed reciting “She should have died hereafter”, our parents have always been there for us; teaching us self discipline and independence. They have guided us through the con­fused years of childhood and adolescence to physical, mental, and spiritual maturity. I would like to extend a thank you to all our par-ictory Olson ents for their continuous love and support over the years. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “My chief want in life is someone who shall make me do what I can.” Throughout our formative years our instructors have had the thankless job of making us do our best. Though we don’t always like to admit it, our teachers have played a large role in the development of our philosophies, priorities, and values; sharing with us their knowledge, experience, and even their laughter - from Mr. Kireef’s quiet jokes in Chemistry to Mr. Schmid’s dry humor in Math. All our teachers have been our instructors, coun­sellors, spiritual guides, and friends. I would like to take this opportunity to offer our friends a heartfelt thank you. I am sure you are all aware that this was Mr. Fortin’s first year as Principal of Catholic Central High. Partially due to his influence, this has been a year marked by many changes and achievements. The first school newspaper was published and the “Chatter” had a very successful year, thanks to the able work of Mr. Salcedo. This year was also a landmark for the school in sporting activities. Our teams cap­tured the City Championships in Football and Waterpolo, and the Zone Championships in Girls’ Volleyball, and Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball. It is a record of which our Graduating Class can be proud. The Educational Tour of Italy, The Fashion Show, the Winter Carnival, and Mission Week are only a few of the activities and events in which we, as a class, have participated, in part or as a whole. Through these memories we have shared, the good and the bad alike, we have grown closer. Perhaps the most important thing we have shared together is each other. Though many of us shall be going our own separate ways this fall, the love and friend­ships we have formed over the last twelve years will survive forever in our hearts. As a part of the Catholic Com­munity, we have grown even closer through our religion. Our Catholic belief has been one of the most im­portant guiding influences in our lives. Our faith in God has enabled us to overcome the many obstacles we have faced and will continue to strengthen us. Now we must look to the future - for it is upon us. We must turn to­ward it; away from the past. Though the memory of the last twelve years will always remain with us, we now enter the community as young adults with all the privileges and responsibilities which that title brings.
